Its not a big thing...these Sril Lankan play at least 1 series against Zimbabwe & Bangladesh every year (home & away)...& they play most of their cricket in the sub continent...This guy Mendis, who was the quickest to pick 50 wickets in the ODI's hasn't played a single match out of sub continent I guess...

To be fair to Murali/Mendis, they can only play against only those opponents whom their board chooses. But you are right - their main opponents have been (in order):

1. Bangladesh
2. Pakistan / Zimbabwe

But a look at, Muralitharan's Test stats page shows the following:
  • His number of tests and wickets are evenly spread
  • His performance shows consistency
  • But a closer look reveals that he has struggled against India and Australia
  • He has been successful mostly in Asia - 581 out of 769 wickets in Asia
  • He has not had much success bowling in India and Australia
A look at Shane Warne's stats page shows that he has been more or less successfull against all nations except India and he has more or less the same strike rate all over (except India).

But this does not take away Murali's greatness. He is still the greatest wicket taking bowler and his strike rate and bowling average is phenomenonal. Srilanka are indeed blessed, because just when MM is nearing retirement, they have found another great bowler in Mendis.

Though taking no credit away from these world-class spinners, I think its more difficult for fast bowlers to achieve these feats...just because of the toll it takes on the body.
Respect for Walsh, Akram & our very own Kapil Dev.
