Default Murali sets Test retirement date.

Sri Lankan off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has said he will retire from Test cricket next year. Murali, who is the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 770 wickets in 127 Tests, announced that the two-Test home series against West Indies in November 2010 would be his last.

It will be a grand farewell to the highest wicket taker in the history of test cricket. I seriously doubt whether his record will be broken soon.

I wish he achieve 800 milestone before the farewell.

Record like that are easy to break. But record like his wicket per match & average are difficult to break.

Yes, He has been a legend throughout his career and it has been a wise decision on his part to set the retirement date early.

He will surely achieve 800 before his retirement....

More than 1 year too go...

yes, In my opinion one should always say goodbye to the game during passing through its best form.

Yeah, Many great cricketers have to make a sudden exit from international arena because of their bad form in the recent times. I hope this doesn't happen with him.

The exit should be made in a way that people remember and teams miss you for years.

I don't think that the record will be broken easily. Here is why:

    a) Cricketers usually last 100 test matches at the max. Only super legends play beyond that. But assume that cricketer play 125 test matches.
    b) Which in itself is now very difficult because countries are playing more ODIs and T20s now.
    c) At an average of 10 tests per year (not a certainty), this means a career span of 13 years. Cricketer are plagued by injuries. So add 2 years. This means 15 years.
    d) Bowlers do not last that long.
    e) 800 wickets / 125 tests = 6.4 wickets per test. Improbable, if not impossible.

Very very valid point kixi. I agree on all of them.

Talking about more ODIs and T20s means more records and legend in these form of games.

    Nice calculations Kix......

The pace at which test cricket is going these days....I think reaching even 500 wickets will become a big task...!!

I don't agree with kix.More tests are going to be played & ODI is going to be scrapped as it is a crappy form of cricket which had lost it meaning in era of T20. See the recent stat you will realise that more test matches have been played by the players of this era than any other era. Thats why Highest like record have lost meaning & averages , strike rates( in case of bowler) matter more.

Oh, but rules are rules. A person without legs had to qualify for Olympics by running on legs(Pistoris had to get artificial legs). If he had wanted he would have run on wheel chairs but would have been disqualified.
Murali was given lifeline only because of muscle power of Asian block in ICC. ( Remember Shoaib Akhtar).
If Chandrashekar had that action then he might also have been a chucker but as far as i know doosra was started by Saqlain Mustaq & had been bowled by only players who have been reported for suspected actions. Chandrashekhar was legspinner. Before posting get your facts right. He had polio in wrist it didnot mean he used to chuck.

Chandra was stricken by polio at the age of five but turned the handicap to his advantage with an indomitable spirit and with a withered right arm, he became one of the great leg-break bowlers of all time. He sent the ball down at virtual medium pace - quick enough to once hit a surprised Griffith with a bouncer - bowling googlies and top-spinners with his emaciated right arm, although he sometimes suffered from being used as a stock rather than an attacking bowler. Understandably, his batting was poor, and he fielded and threw with his left arm. Cricinfo
Murali if had want can bowl normally but he don't. Australia Spin Academy had decided to not teach the doosra as it is chucking. Nowhere above is mentioned that Chandra used to bend his hands more but he use to bowl with back of his hands which don't violate any rules.

I have seen Murali bowl since I started watching cricket. He is a great bowler. Even though a greater % of his wickets has come against the minnows (Bangaldesh & Zimbabwe), still a wicket is wicket. It will take a greater effort to break Murali's wicket.

Sri Lankan cricket need to look beyond the Mural's, the Vass & Sanath. It will interesting to see how the Sri Lankan cricket goes beyond murali...

I take him as the world's best spinner, if not bowler. I got to meet him once, my freind had his cousins to his house, then i came to know those cousins were nephews of murali, their dad was a brother of murali.

He had come to the middle east once, so had met him in sharjah also!

Read the memoirs of Tiger Pataudi and u might be surprised.
The polio affected wrist gave Chandra an unique advantage. On certain days his wrist could rotate almost 300 degrees. on those days he was just unstoppable. Clive Lloyd wrote about one such day in his book when Chanda single handedly defeated West Indies from the sight of sure victory. but technically speaking that was an action not purely in the rule book. and how do you think he used to sent those yorkers and bouncers from his shortish run up?

And as far as reporting bowlers is concerned, so far all such reporting has been done by umpires of one single country.

I respect Murali for his bowling and humble nature. It's unfortunate that people still call him a chucker even after he has taken 700+ test wickets.

    Some humor-

Bishan Singh Bedi (I respect him too, and consider him a great serious comedian ) once said, if people with disabilities can play international cricket, there should be blind umpires too...
