chinese mobiles are not reliable at all and very soon vodafone, airtel, idea are going to ban all chinese phones.
According to Delhi Poilce we can not trace these mobiles as we can trace other nokia, samsung or any other branded mobile phones.

I never purchased any chinese phone and even i always tell my friends not to go for this ****

No dont dream of warranties ... you ll not get them ....

They r very cheap and very unreliable ..... The quality is also very low .......

There is no reason to by them ... as they wont last more than a year . Ialso heard that if you buy chinese touch screen phones the touch screen stops working properly after a while ....

I have never used it myself so cannot confirm the above ....

Chinese mobile either dont have the IMEI number or have duplicate IMEI number.
Even their performance deteriorates after 1 yr.
The terrorist who were recently caught, all used Chinese mobiles.

If we are speaking about Chinese fakes... they are not worth for people who have heavy usage....
There was an issue with the handset once and i got the handset replaced.
The fakes might not have the registration.
There are also genuine Chinese Models / companies available. Check them.

The companies are not going to ban the handsets. Its the government.

DoT asks telecom operators to cut off mobiles without security codes

The Government has finally pulled its finger out over the use of mobile phones in terror acts. Mobile operators have been ordered to stop selling phones with fake IMEI (Fake phone ID) numbers.

Phones carrying either fake IMEI numbers or not carrying one at all, have proven costly for the security agencies as intelligence spooks can neither track nor monitor the calls made from phones without proper security codes.

Now mobile operators have been ordered by the government to stop providing further connectivity to phones without IMEI numbers.

The problem originates with cheap Chinese mobiles available in Indian grey markets, which can be used by terrorists with no fear of inderdiction.

An IMEI number consists of 15-17 digits. Most branded handsets carry a genuine IMEI number. On SIM activation, the number gets registered with the GSM service provider. The handsets can be blocked at any time with the help of the IMEI number.

The cops had earlier been able to earmark the phones used in terror attacks, but it proved almost impossible to retrieve any details of ownership without IMEI numbers.

The endless bickering between rival Indian telecom regulatory authorities lies at the heart of the problem and it is high time the Government realised strong action was needed.
    More story...

The DoT has reportedly directed all operators to authenticate the handsets active on their respective network in an effort to curb the menace posed by fake IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identification) numbers of Chinese handsets.

DoT found that these cheap handsets have all zeros as IMEI or number at all as IMEI. In wake of recent terror attacks such handsets with fake IMEI pose a security challenge for the agencies monitoring the call details. DoT wants calls from such handsets to be rejected by the operators.

DoT has asked the operators to set up Equipment Identity Register (EIR) that can be used for authentication and security purposes.

DoT has now given the operators 2 months time to complete the process

What is IMEI number of your mobile handset ?

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number of a mobile handset is a 15 digit number unique to a mobile handset. Just key in *#06# on your cellular phone and it will display its IMEI number in most phones. Note it down safely. It is also usually printed on the compliance plate of the handset.

In fact each GSM mobile phone is assigned a unique IMEI code when it is produced. If you know the IMEI code of a mobile phone, you can check information regarding manufacturer, model type, date and country of approval. To do so Click here.

IMEI number can help in tracking or blocking your mobile phone if it is lost. When a phone is switched on, the IMEI number is transmitted and checked against a database in the network's EIR (Equipment Identity Register). The EIR has three categories namely the "white lists", "grey lists" and "black lists". The operator can block a handset by putting it in black list. Also by using Global Positioning System an operator can track the handset user also. But the use of these lists and technologies is at the operators' discretion. Generally operators provide these services in case of special investigations only.

Again.. the usage is governed by the Government.. probably we need an FIR copy to be submitted to the Service provider if in case any investigation is to be done.

In 90% of the cases the SPs ignore the tracing complaints until unless accompanied with a pressure from the police / political lobby.
Also, tracing a handset thru a IMEI number is tedious task.

On the other hand, Blocking the IMEI is easy.. but one can always change the SP.... it has to be the common database of the Telecom Operators which should be referred. (as was case in Australia - 165000 stolen handsets blocked in 9 months).

The IMEI number can be altered electronically. I dont know whether it is crime in India as is in Australia.

okey but we still do not have the EIR in place i guess..

are laws different for CDMA and GSM operators and handsets..
I mean cloning started with CDMA...

    Cellular phone Cloning
Cellular phone cloning is copying the identity of one cellphone to another cellphone. The cellphones can be re-configured so that the calls are billed to other persons. The identification numbers of a victim cellphone user is stolen and re-programmed into another cellphone.
Each cellular phone has a unique pair of identification numbers - Electronic Serial Number (ESN) and Mobile Identification Number (MIN). These numbers can be cloned without the knowledge of the subscriber or the carrier through the use of electronic scanning devices.
Cellular thieves can capture ESN & MIN pair using devices such as cellphone ESN reader or DDI (Digital Data Interpreters) by monitoring the radio wave transmissions from the cell phones of legitimate subscribers. The ESN & MIN are then transferred into another cellphone using a computer loaded with specialised software, or a 'copycat' box, a device specially made to clone phones. There are other devices also such as Plugs and ES-Pros which are as small as a calculator that do not require computers or copycat boxes for cloning. The entire programming process takes 10-15 minutes per phone. Cloning is possible in both GSM and CDMA technologies.
Any call made with cloned phone are billed and traced to a legitimate cellphone account. Innocent subscribers end up with unexplained monthly cellphone bills.
If you get your cellphone bill unexpectedly high, you must check the details of billing where you may find numbers whom you never called. If so, It is possible that your cellphone has been cloned and someone else is making calls using your identity.
Many criminals use cloned cellphones for illegal activities, because their calls are not billed to them, and are therefore much more difficult to trace. Cloned phones are often used to make long distance calls, even to foreign countries.
Pre-paid users are at lesser risk, not because their cellphones can't be cloned technically but because the misuse would be quickly detected and would be limited. Cellphone cloning has been taking place throughout the world for long although it was reported in India this year only when police arrested people related to this crime in Delhi and Mumbai.
