You can set it your self (upto 9). Menu -> Edit Settings -> Select a value from the Dropdown Menu and Save.

It's kind of same as this widget. It will show the updates as Bookmark inside a folder in Firefox (live bookmarks). I use it to get updates on new posts from blog (ie: Torrent Freak).

You can add it by clicking this button in addressbar.

It will show up updates inside a folder.

(It's not very effective in some websites though).

Refer this page: Mozilla Firefox: RSS web feeds and Live Bookmarks

U r partially right in ur understanding doc...

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names.

I use Google Reader for grabbing the RSS feeds from various sites and display them for me to read and use!

You explained it good and highlighted the alternate way to get feeds... I'm comfortable with that too... But I prefer Google reader so that clean format of system doesn't affect my record of subscribed pages...
