    Default Yard Games

Today morning, I accidently marked all forums as READ.

After returning back after an hour or so, I find that most of the new posts (over 90%) are these games threads in the "Yard" section.

It is fine to play these games occassionally but please let us all be contibutive in other manner too.

I have noticed this long back & its been happening for quite some time.

If you seen the new post, almost most of the threads are from Yard sections only. Sometimes its really difficult to find a good thread.

If we don't allow the games, then people might say that "All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy"

If we allow games, then we have the current situation where the Yard section has become more popular than the other tech sections.

We must have some control over this games otherwise in future we may see only posts in the Yard section.

I am yet to see a community where people only play games...the ratio of serious people vs non-serious people always balances out.

So far as regular tech threads are not interrupted by spam that should be good enough for the community.

    Exactly.

Moreoever, Not everyone can be categorized as either Serious or Non-Serious. There are many members who post in Serious Tech threads as well as Yard Games.

It wont ever happen in future that members will only post in the Yards section..

But, as j4k said: The frequency of playing games can be reduced. I agree.

My point is understood by sk.

No harm in playing games. I too post on the non-tech threads.

But all senior members after being part of the community for so long must have learnt a lot on technical issues too. Surely, all of you could help. If you cannot solve a technical issue, do point to the correct thread/solution. My feeling is that forum is becoming a huge chat board.

Rameshjee is right. All these "yard" threads is spoiling the forum search - technical threads do get hidden deep on the 5th page, for instance.

j4k, is it possible to exclude yard section from the "New Posts" Search Results. I think it should be possible with some minor tweak.

It is possible...in fact the offtopic section can and should be excluded from the live ispy page. That way everyone is happy.

No. That is not possible. Only Admin can do it. Admin is against mods/tweaks and I agree.

yes thats correct. many times i have also faced the same problem.
I suggest that J4K has brought this issue to notice of all members so let us only control it but surely not stop it. May be 15 around post in yard perday is enough for a person i guess..

ok will try and get back to track of technical threads as i was at the first

^ easy for you (not just you but all the veterans) to say...getting ~3000, 4000 and 7000+ posts.

You can sit there at the top and look at the new users with very less number of posts. Must be a great view at the top!

And by restricting the new users what do you achieve?... I think it is a good strategy. No one will be able to match the forum veterans ever; either with the post count or with rep power.

...just the thought of being superior to n00bs must make you very happy...

hey cool down mate i am really sorry if i was too harsh on that matter.
I never ment about anything of senior or noob here. I just said it because J4K has asked for the views and he is correct also as yard is getting more hits than any other section. Sorry bro if i hurt your feelings but i am not objecting you or anybody to post in the yard...

where did this post count, rep power came to comparison suddenly ?
please mate dont bring such things inbetween.

@KK: Its ok. I was not reacting to what you said...but an overall perception that I am getting by looking at this thread.

Let j4x react...I would like to know his views on this since he has the highest number of posts in the forum.

Hey Amal ... thats not a fair ... You know what!! -> there havent been so many games and offtopic threads/posts in the forum in earlier days. Most members you see with High post counts have have got huge amount of posts in technical threads. Infact more than 95% of my first 2000 posts were only in technical threads. Did you ever feel anyone differentiating between newbies and veterans in this forum!! I really didnt like the last line in your post specially to a member like KK. Plz dont take me otherwise...

    @KK

It will be tough to restrict the number of posts in the yard section by a member perday... I dont think this is a good idea. I really like the Movie guessing game.. That game will take about 15 posts in no time ...

oly we guys are using Ispy, so let it be as such. New posts feature will be sufficient for other uses.

I feel very sad whenever someone says this. I wish you would never ever talk like again.

My post was never pointed towards KK only. Sorry KK if you feel offended.

I am saying this to all the veterans of this forum.

I am not getting into a debate as to how people got so many posts...They must have worked hard to do so. That is not my point.

My point is that no one can not dictate to any one as to how they post...So long as they are not breaking the rules of the forum, it should be fine.

No one is restricting any one - least of all me.

But spamming is hardly the way to reach to the top. Everyone starts with zero posts. If I (or for that matter anyone else) have reached a particular level, this is because of useful contributions and some light spamming on the side.

There are some reasons for my thread:

    a) A forums popularity depends upon the content and number of hits.
    b) A forum full of spams ranks high on hits but does not rank well in Google
    c) Less popularity with Google means less ad's and revenue
    d) New members will be attracted because of content. Nearly everyone here became a member because of a Google search.
    e) And finally, the forum consumes bandwidth. This bandwidth costs money. That money should be spent on useful purposes.

I hope the reasons are clear.

I am only suggesting to cut down on spam. If that is not followed, please remember the sticky post in the "yard" section. I may yet start this by deleting the old posts in the forum games - I will let the game continue but delete the older posts.

I am not at all angry and this is not an outburst. A perfectly neutral tone. Everything to improve the forum.

hey no mate i didnt take it seriously, no issues.
sorry amal but just now you said that you told it in general to all senior members but  you should have not told it.

Even J4K has not told to stop posting in the yard section but he only said contribute in other sections also and play in yard also. He himself comes and plays there but have you seen how many posts he post there ! hardly a few. Same way what he is trying to explain is post in all the sections, rather than stiicking to yard only.

As a newbie (new member) you can spam, as your new to the forum trying to mingle with the others. But as you grow with the forum when you have become a bit senior in the forum, you can reduce the spamming & set a good example to the other newbies.
