Default Method: How to correctly link a post

Many of you link to another post in your own post like this:

http://www.indiabroadband.net/genera...tml#post192631 (An IBF Thought (Cartoon series ..Picture1))

Now there is a lot of problem in linking as above. I bet that the above link does not exactly take you to the correct post. Now, why is that? The reason is the way the URL is built for each link by vBulletin.

    vBulletin forms URL as follows:

    http//: forum URL / section_name / <... more section names / ...> thread_id-title-page_no#post_id

That is the problem. The page number. The page number is controlled by your user CP preferences. The default is 10 posts per page. But I hate to scroll thru pages; so I have set it higher at 30 posts per page. Because of the wrong page number, the URL is incorrect and hence link fails.

The correct way to refer posts is using the BB code tags: [POST]post_id[/POST].

For example, in the above link, the post id is 192631. So to link the above simply use:

    Sample: [POST]192631[/POST]
    Result: http://www.indiabroadband.net/showthread.php?p=192631

Thanks. Will follow it from now on. My settings are 40 posts (max) per page. Now, i realize that all the links to other posts i include in my posts, makes no sense to almost all members ..

I generally right click on the post number and copy that link location from there in firefox.

like saurav's post will be: http://www.indiabroadband.net/sugges...tml#post192857 (Method: How to correctly link a post)

That will not be correct - especially from page 2 onwards. For page 1, it will be fine, because page number is not part of URL on the first page itself.

The default is 15 posts per page now ... earlier it was 10 posts per page..

I changed it about 2-3 weeks ago to reduce the load on database server as lesser number of posts per page meant more queries per user in one session and more bandwidth as well.

I was planning to change it to 20 but then I though every one would kick me around for doing that... well now I know that you guys all wanna see more then 20 posts per page so I guess I am safe if we change it to 20... right?

Keep it 30 please. Its the most practical number IMO.

I also use 30 posts per page. I think the more, the better.

    I think he means this,

    HTML Code:
    [URL]http://www.indiabroadband.net/[/URL]

    [URL="http://www.indiabroadband.net/"]Indiabroadband.net[/URL]
We can change the title to what ever we like (eg: Indiabroadband.net instead of http://www.indiabroadband.net/).

I was wondering about the same.

When posting external links sometimes the site title is displayed instead of the url. You can fix it by removing tick mark on "Automatically retrieve titles from external links" from Miscellaneous Options under the editbox in Advanced mode.

    Screenshot 035.jpg

Example: http://www.indiabroadband.net/ instead of India Broadband Forum- India's largest ISP forum

And you can disable hyperlinking to an address in the post by removing tick mark on "Automatically parse links in text" from Miscellaneous Options under the editbox in Advanced mode.

    Example: http://www.indiabroadband.net/

To avoid spam posts. You can post the links as hxxp instead of http.
