Default Method: How to attach images to forum posts properly?

Many people attach images to posts. Some people use image hosting sites such as imageshack or tinypic. Others attach images directly to posts. Whatever method you chose is correct.

But there are certain norms that should be followed:
    • Always use web image formats such as JPG, GIF or PNG. BMPs create huge file size. It will take a lot of time to upload and consume your own bandwidth as well as everyone else's.
    • Many people paste screen shots. While creating a picture of the screen shot, a lot of screen presence is not required. A small cut out is sufficient. Create the picture of the cut-out only.
    • Try to limit the size to 800x600 at most.
    • Use [IMG][/IMG] bbCode tags.
    • You could use image hosting sites for a lot of pictures. And you can load the thumbnails here. All image hosting sites provide forum link codes for thumbnails. All you have to do is cut and paste the code.
    • For limited number of pictures, say less than 5, you can upload the picture on the forum thread itself. Use the "Attach Files" option.
    • If you attach image files to the thread, don't leave the attached image as a pure attachment. Insert the image in the post body as explained later.
How to insert image into the thread body?
After attaching the image to the picture, you can show the image in the post body by two different methods. Here I have attached a sample picture to the post (it is a caricature for Gothic_Coder ).
    • Option 1: Use [IMG][/IMG] bbCode tags. (Preferred option)
      • Right click on the attached image link and copy the link URL.
      • In my case the link URL is
        http://www.indiabroadband.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4427&stc=1&d=124738215 9
      • Insert the link in the post follows:
        [IMG]http://www.indiabroadband.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4427&stc=1&d=124738215 9[/IMG]
      • Insert the link in the post follows:
        [IMG]http://www.indiabroadband.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4427&stc=1&d=124738215 9[/IMG]
      • Result is as follows:

        Fig: Gothic_Coder searching for reposts
      .
    • Option 2: Use [ATTACH][/ATTACH] bbCode tags.
      • Right click on the attached image link and find the attachment id.
      • In my case the link attachment id is in the image URL and it is 4427.
        http://www.indiabroadband.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4427&stc=1&d=124738215 9
      • Insert the link in the post follows:
        [ATTACH]4427[/ATTACH]
      • Result is as follows:

    Good one kix.

If someone quotes a post containing am image included using Option 2, only the link of the image appears in the quoted post.

    Nice thread

You could use image hosting sites for a lot of pictures. And you can load the thumbnails here.
doesn't make a difference in the sense that anyways we can post only 5 thumbnails per post.

    some picx...

If we use external image urls, we can include maximum of 8 images in a post.

But, only 5 image per post can be attached here.

If you use image hosting sites, I think it allows six or eight pictures, not five.

Well, they do to the forum server at least. But it is also a little irritating to click on the thumbnail to get the bigger size. If the full size image is linked, then it is much better.

I always use a full sized image but am very lazy to resize all the images to 800px width. One add-on that I would love to see on this forum is the auto image resize.

It is so easy to resize images. Use the MS Office Photo Editor for the purpose.
