Well heres my take on the issue.
There is no argument about the fact that this is preimarily a Tech forum. But the number of tech queries that come in a day can be counted in one hand. Now, as is evident from the Stat board, there are some 30-40 members who are regularly online and out of therm about 20-25 are online for considerable time. Every time a Tech query is posted, they are there to reply immediately. So they help in gaining credibility for the forum and the word is spreading that this is one forum where your problems can be solved in no time. But what do they do to keep the interest going while there are no queries? naturally, they turn to chit-chat, exchanging jokes, discussing songs/movies, playing games and some spamming. Now if those are restricted, soon they would start visiting other sites to kill the boredom. And then gradually their online presence will reduce. The effect would be that the real Tech queries would also not be answered as quickly as at present and the forum would lose the standing it presently has.
So, it seems to be a Hobson's choice.
Either to maintain status quo and ensure that all Tech queries get replied in a ziffy, but at the cost of "database errors" or to restrict all offtopic posts and watch as the number of online members steadily decline and the Tech queries also get neglected.
