Thread: Should Rep System be Time Based ?

In the recent time I have been unable to rep people who post useful articles.

Many members here have a nice habit of sharing Useful Info quite frequently.

But I have seen many members (including me) are unable to give reps to useful posts.

I urge Admin kindly to look into this matter and make any necessary changes if possible.

Here are my suggestions:

1.->Make Rep system time based (If possible).Say after 2-3 Days you can Rep the same person again.

2.->Decrease the no. of people after which we can rep the same person again.

Time based rep system is a good idea.

Recently we had a thread "Are we misusing our rep powers ?". There was a healthy debate on how, when , when not to use repo power. But even after a good debate the outcome of thread is NIL.I still see members giving / exchanging repo for no reason. I myself have received repo for thanks & congrats thread. Many members are not using their repo power effectively.

Think twice before giving repo. Ask yourself whether this post really deserves a repo. I have been following this right from the beginning & I have never had any issues in giving repo for useful threads/posts. Try doing the same, I am sure it will help you.

I have stopped giving reps for jokes and such articles long ago.

A rep should be given carefully. Give reps to articles that increase general knowledge, help other members and improve the content of the forum.

I don't have problem with the rep system. I really donot worry too much. But if an opinion is asked, I give it.

I have another plan,

The forum gives rep points to the members (this is only for awarding to others) how much he has in the bank only that much he can give others.. say everyday the member gets the same amount of rep points to award to others, how much is his rep power.

Ex: If a member has 2 in his rep power he will get only 2 points to award to others per day (or can double it, depending on everybodies wish).

So now what happens is we will think twice before we give rep because we are not having unlimited reps and if there are 2 good posts and only 1 rep you hae today then wait till tomorow and give him. Now what is happeneing is there will be a good post but we cant rep him and later we forget to give rep to him, so in this method no bodies good post wil be missed out as the very next day he can rep that post.

Its just my thought... It may not be good enough but I expect atleast some replies for it.

I use rep thing to determine people attitude towards me. I hardly care about it.
I am giving rep for jokes ( not since 2 days cause I have stopped reading them). I think current system is good.

Well If I have 2 points and I liked 12 of the posts won't it mean its going to restrict me from giving rep to the rest 10 and next day someone might post better.

Giving rep to someone is based on user's personal discretion. Might be some posts are not useful to everyone but someone may find it worth a rep. There are many posts which are just copy pastes of google group or TOI still we rep them while if someone has internet will definitely check news online.

Almost every forum gives rep power to its users and it hardly matters who is giving rep to whom on what purpose if you don't want to then do not as simple as that.

Members who contribute towards the content is very few. Even if we take total contributing members, it is around 10. It is very hard to say we need to spread some love before giving it to you. Reps are mostly consumed for these top 10 members. If we have a time based system, I think we rep these members without spreading out much, which will surely reduce the give away of the rep.

Exactly correct. That is why i have mentioned that it shall be decided by all the users that how many rep points forum shall allot them to give per day.

Everyday you wont get good posts to rep so if one day you dont give it or you were not online that day then it will be added to your account so next day you will be having 4 points to give

That method is good.

I didn't participate in "Are we misusing" thread and will do same in this also.. What's the big deal if we exchange rep for jokes, copy paste articles? That's not gonna change your life.. If something makes me laugh then i'm gonna rep that thread, post..

This thread is not about when to give rep, but about the error message we get frequently "You must spread some reputation around before giving it to X.Y.Z. again"

Sometimes when a user post useful articles frequently we are not able to rep him for all the articles,even though s/he deserves them.

That's why I wanted some change in the rep system.

Well we're not deviating topic.. Mods suggested to stop giving rep to jokes or copy paste stuff... If you do that you won't face any problems

Also i think that besides technical queries/answers, Almost all thread are either copy pasted or modified... There are exception though..

This thread is also taking the same way as NPU's thread took, which I didn't want, and I don't want to discuss about that,as we already had one earlier.

Gotcha Sid... Didn't gave my opinion in that thread also... I tried to explain this because this has been discussed earlier and no outcome came from that

Just have a look at the scenario:

We stop giving reps to jokes and copy paste stuff.

Now,If we only give reps to query solutions (which we don't do every day)
then suppose after one week we are back with another query and the same person solves it.Now, we have not distributed enough rep in between so we are not able to rep the same person again.

So,how does not giving reps to jokes and copy paste stuff solve the problem ?

You're taking me wrong buddy... I'm in favour of repping whatever you feel good, Be it original or not

If someone solves my query or something i find useful in broadband stuff then definitely i give rep, but if someone makes me laugh or someone posted which is copy pastes but i've never see then also i give rep...

But eventually it's only on mods/admin whether they want to change the rep system or not..

Hey, that was not directed to you.

I was just giving a general opinion that not giving Reps to copy paste stuff and joke content will not solve the problem.That's it.
