    Default General site maintenance

We would have a down time of about 30-45 mins today due to some maintenance work at the data center. We don't have a specific time so it could be anytime between now and 00:00 GMT.

    Thanks
    Aaron

Can you guys please ping indiabroadband.net and tell me what the latency is like from different cities?

It would be great if you could please specify your city and ISP.

How do you plan to reduce latency? There is nothing you can do to your server that would reduce latency for people in India.
I checked the latency and found this site's ip to be better then most data centres in USA and even Europe.
The planet ips give a latency of more then 350 consistently and I have been checking yours and I alwas get less then 320 which is so much better then other sites I go to.

I checked the latency for another broadband forum with a .in TLD and it is 350ms+ so this forum is quicker by 30ms.

Limestone's network is not one of the best in the USA but the rout it takes for India is by far the shortest and thats probably why you choose it. I am a webmaster myself and have researched this in the past and found Limestone to be the best data center in NorthAmerica as far as latency is conscerned. Even Rackspace's data center which is supposed to be one of the best in the world their USA data centers give 350ms + here in India.

No offence but I find it rathar funny you saying will do something about latency when there is nothing you can do about it on the server end. Are you going to lay a direct cable to USA?

    Edge,
I believe in the phrase "actions speak louder then words"

    Members,

If you guys had a choice between being able to use avatars or have a super fast forum (faster to load then you can imagine) even on dialups then what would you choose?
I need opinions on this urgently please as the work that is going to be done on this forum is stuck on 2-3 things and this avatar issue is one of them.

I promise to provide you guys with the fastest loading and super responsive forum with probably even lesser advertisements for guests.

I never said that I would do something to the server to bring latency down. Please check what readings you get now and if you feel the difference while browsing.

The drop in latency is because site now runs off a server located in India.

I think everything looks fine but if any of you finds a problem on the forum please let me know.

Attachments have been disabled temporarily due to some back end problem and will try to get this problem resolved as soon as possible.

Is the forum loading fast enough for everyone? If you see the forum lagging or something please let me know as I will need a lot of feedback to make more improvements.

Does anyone get a latency of less then 30? because that was what I was aiming for atleast members with fiber optic connections should see less then 30ms .

Thanks and I am off to sleep now as I haven't slept for the last 36 hours.

    Happy foruming

Mine average ping time for the forum is 54 ms now. It used to be in 290s earlier.

Trace route is completed within 12 hops, earlier it was 18.

    ISP is Airtel, Bangalore.

Also, to answer your question Admin, I would choose speed over Avatars.

However, the forum is loading at a brisk pace now.
    Thanks.

I just noticed that my patent smiley (punk) which used to be there in my signature is no more available. Also, other smileys have gone too. Is it permanent?

54ms is fairly good. Your pleasure done must be very near to where the server is

Latency has gone down. But inspite of flushing dns, the browser would redirect to the old IP address. This problem was resolved when I physically created a hosts file with new DNS entry in \windows\system32\drivers\etc, as follows:

I would choose avatars as it would bring more personality to our page. We in india are no more on dial ups.

With regard to advertisements , you need to make money, we want you to make money, that is what is going to "run" the place.

What i suggest is that you try and change the format of the ads a bit such that they are clearly visible but do not disturb much. For the members who do not want ads at all, give an option of premium membership which would remove all ads and give privileges such as a higher PM limit, power to change thread title (started by them) and stuff like that for a small amount (few $ or so).

To provide a better experience for visitors. It is a dedicated and bandwidth costs ate sky high. No other country I know of has such high prices for hosting. Bandwidth prices are controlled by the Indian government which has kept hosting costs artificially high in India. India could have easily become the DC hub for Asia if the government would let the market decide the prices.

Any idea about the logic behind controling prices and keeping them out of reach of most customers and making them buy hosting in USA? It is certainly not doing any good to the country is what I know for sure.
