@imrock
There are lots of Image Hosting sites available through which you can fulfill your requirements.
Why was the attachment option removed all of a sudden in the first place? There's nothing wrong with it so what's the problem?
I like using a free image/file hosting service is better than attachments. We can also manage the files better in a free file hosting service. And according to the previous forum limit, we could add only six images/files to a post as attachment and eight images with free image/file hosting service.
The only problem is, it's possible for them [files or the website it self] to disappear one day and all our work would be lost.
so should we have the attachment opition back???
or plz tell me image hosting sites.
but attachment method was better.
I use TinyPic for image hosting and MediaFire for file hosting.
Both are good for their original purpose [TinyPic for image hosting and Mediafire for file hosting].
Registering a free account will allow you to manage the uploaded files and get additional features.
Like,
- Uploading larger files
- Uploading/Managing multiple files
- Creating albums/slideshows
- Delete files etc
ImageShack is another image hosting site.
thanks u all
but i don't understand why "Manage attachments" was removed?
The attachment option was disabled because it creates a lot of load on server and many more reasons are there which inversely affects the performance of the site.
The problem is that we are on an Indian server now and the amount of money they charge for bandwidth is just out of this world.
I have asked a developer to code something for us so we can enable the attachments again. The new thing will be that it will be stored on a US server hence reducing the costs.
Forum currently uses less then 20GB per day but if we keep adding the attachments at the pace we were earlier then it would only take about 6 months more to get to 30GB per day mark. Bandwidth overages are sky high at Indian data centers. Its Rs200 per GB per month.
500GB works out at Rs100000 per month which is about US$2500.
I didn't even notice the attachments option removed.........maybe because I didn't really use it a lot!!!
If it is removed I'm sure there must be a good enough reason for it, otherwise I don't think such a feature would have been removed.
@admin
I have given attachments/inserts in my posts for the past one year.
from 16th Oct 2008 till now , mostly jpg pictures ( less than each 30 KB or 40 KB or even less mostly ) Total 339 attachments. 13.24 MB
I also pointed out that for a BMP annexure 2 MB was allowed by the forum. but very little even for a pdf file. Only Admin or Moderator could post a large zip file
BMP upload can be deleted.
2.I specifically mentioned , in my
replies to members not to POST BMP or large
JPG pictures, as quota for me is only 1 GB per month. ( or used to say that it can be seen only during my free night usage time ).
If you want ,I can review all my annexures , and delete some, to keep within a quota say 3 MB ( like Private messages ).
I dont think storage for annexures/ inserts, could have exceeded even 5 GB in a Year for all members , as except in Tech forums,
others do not normally use annexures.
Once it took almost a week to solve a problem, and I had to ask the member to
post all the modem pages. The problem was
solved after changing the TIME ZONE entry
in the modem settings!
Please review.
Para two:
@Archer "out of thread"
If there is no activity/download for say 90 days or so, the file is deleted. So far TinypicThe only problem is, it's possible for them [files or the website it self] to disappear one day and all our work would be lost.
has not done so. ( same way in Email applications like Hotmail/Yahoo etc )
No idea about Google now.
The problem occurs when people post a 2meg picture inline and more often then not it would be a silly screen shot or something and anyone opening that page ends up downloading a 2meg useless picture.
The idea of increasing the attachment storage size was mine but things were different then as bandwidth was cheap and we had 1500gb of storage available to us because the site was hosted in USA where things are cheap.
Now that the site is in India I think carrying on with default settings for storage would be the best way farward and ban posting pictures inline so those people who have limited bandwidth will not get affected and can see the pic by clicking on the link provided if they wanted to.
I think image insert tag should be disabled and that should do the trick.
essbebe you dont need to delete your attachments. I deleted about 500MB attachments that were posted in jokes and that sort of sections some time back to bring the bandwidth consumption down a bit.
