u can also save a lot of b/w by using a text browser like Lynx and increase ur productivity since there will be no need to block any avatar in the first place.
Its 6TB we have at our disposable with a 1000mbps data pipe so dont really need to save up on bandwidth on the server side.

On the other hand the majority of our visitors have a limited bandwidth internet connection so they end up using their bandwidth because of the avatars... You must have noticed that even our theme is very stripped down to make sure bandwidth usage remains pretty low... We have more then 80% gzip compression as well that too only to save up on people's bandwidth...

On the other hand you must have seen some attachments as 4-5mb and there are thousands of downloads as well but thats something people download because they want to download them where as avatars are something that not every one would really want to use up their bandwidth for... besides that they hardly serve any purpose especially on a techie site.

Had this been one of them santa banta forums we would have some flashy avatars flying around every where but we don't get that kind of crowd here... here people come for troubleshooting and an avatar doesn't really play much role in that.

Now you would ask why let members with 1000+ posts have an avatar then?? That is because we have very few people with 1000+ posts and they are mostly those who are regulars here and help newcomers with their issues so they get to use a few extra features.

    Here goes a quote

When you sign up for just about any social network, you have the option to upload an image that will represent you. No matter what the social site, you'll want to associate an image with your online identify. This image is your "avatar." It's your online persona. It's the way the online community will see you. With it, your profile appears more real, more tangible, more human. A good avatar will help people relate to you as a fellow human being, to take notice of you, to remember you, and to listen to what you have to say.

Sure, you could choose not to upload an image, but why would you? Then you'd be a faceless user that no one remembers or identifies with - making gaining traction in the network much more difficult.

You don't want to blend into the woodwork and be ignored, right?

Choosing your avatar doesn’t need to be difficult. Your image can be a simple picture of your face or just of something you like or identify with. Using the same avatar on many social networks helps brand you and helps people remember who you are. When people recognize your avatar across many platforms, they are more likely to want to be your friend and vote for your story submissions.
