Personal Messages

Few things on the forum have changed and personal message permissions are one of them. Earlier anyone could just register and start sending personal messages to anyone on the forum and some sick people took advantage of this and all they used to do was advertise on the forum all day long without being noticed or so they though. I overlooked thinking there is little harm in some newbie coming to this forum and getting some new members for their forum but the same ungrateful souls laugh at the way this forum is run Oh well.... tough luck then!

Only members with 200+ posts are allowed to send personal messages now and those trying to get to that mark just for this purpose will be dealt with "very" strictly but not until they have reached 199 (I will let you think that you are winning till you reach the threshold) So dont waste your time if spamming on the forum is your only intention as its not going to happen any more.

why don't u guys just appoint more admins instead of putting restrictions on ordinary members like us who come here to get help...
if some morons come here and advertise via PM let them waste their time on that, nobody cares about their sites

no wonder new comers come here and start spamming, opening nonsense thread and bumping old threads...

I can understand your frustration - it is something that senior members do not even have to think about.

When the forum was fairly new in 2006/7, we never had such restrictions. Then as the forum's google ranking went up, the spam count increased. So we brought in spam filters and some restrictions such as "only members with 15+ posts were allowed to post links". But spammers quickly got round to that by posting comments like "Thanks" in each and every thread till they reached 15 count.

Many people use the signature and profile to post links as advertisements. Hence some restrictions have to be applied. Spam guard also filtered out some genuine posts that made genuine members unhappy.

Unfortunately there is no true and correct solution for this. But appointing more moderators will definitely not help. This is like adding more police - the idea should be prevent crime before it happens.

We look forward to good and honest suggestions that should work for all. Even then, it may still displease some but some restrictions will have to be imposed. For instance, do you know that some forums do not accept members without authentication or recommendation? We definitely do not wish to be that strict.

Please help to make this website better. Fresh suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Appointing new mods won't help coz we get number of new members everyday and its really not possible to check and keep track of every new registration.

I totally agree that you don't care about those people but we don't want our members to be misguided and diverted to some external/untrusted website.

These are just information messages, any member who is here to help people would not like to just post his/her links till the time he/she has contributed something to grow community forum (it's my thinking).

Accept my apology for the inconvenience but these restrictions are required, we may consider some more changes if things doesn't go as planned.

I was surprised a week ago when I could not send personal message.(my post count still less than 200 I think) But you are right too many spammers were misusing direct personal message .Could you override and enable mine?

while we are on the subject too many spammers are registering and spamming about Bingo,online Bridge,Internet job ,some new ecommerce site always pimping some thing ....

Iam under the impression all new posts must be appearing on your screen and you are standing with a stick to whack wrong doers.

I some time reply in the spam thread "Houston ! we have a spammer aboard"
Is there a single button where you can report a spammer?
By the way my avatar was apperaing before.Not nowadays .I have settings to do so.Is it new policy or my browser settings??

I think you should bring the minimum required post number to 100 instead of 200.....

I will bring some restrictions down. Sorry I am going to take my own time as this is new for me as well.

I dont think we have restrictions on seeing signatures or links for anyone anymore. If someone still sees that message instead of being able to view an image or link please post in this thread so this can be looked into.

@Admin Have you increased the limit to 300 Posts?? I have 241 posts and I wanted to send a PM to you but I was unable to do so...

Please bring the number of posts down...

This is more of a trick to get more posts from members than the intention of spam control. A spammer won't survive on the forum after 30-50 initial posts. And no spammer in the world will take the pain to post genuine content till say 100 posts and start spamming as he/she gets more access. Rubbish. Write articles for money, make 200 posts to get signature and so on - these are cheap tricks. Specially on a technical forum. Thousands of other more successful forums running without such restrictions. ex - digital point. I was going through some of the sticky threads in 'Suggestions and Complaints' section. Honestly speaking - A normal user gets the impression that this is some kind of Jail.

In that respect, this is not a democracy but a corporate office.

Democracy, Corporate - What kind of discussion is this. This is supposed to be a technical forum. An internet forum. People seek and share knowledge most of which is at free will.

Some discipline (spam control etc) is ok and necessary too, but the impression I got reading the novel of rules, etiquette, how should one behave, how should one write etc, is that all this is written by someone very institutionalized and working in a well disciplined, strict corporate office.

Let some sense prevail.

Anyone here ever tried to register at Team-BHP? If not, give it a try and see whether you succeed. Every registration goes thru a moderation process and only a select few are accepted.

Every forum has its rules. If these are not acceptable then do not join.
