Default How do we make this forum better and get more regular members?

We have no shortage of traffic on this forum from day one. We manage to pull in excess of 40000 unique visitors per day on an average but we still have only a dozen or so regular members may be even less. What can we do to get members to become regular. I am sure there is something that I am not doing right and I cant figure out what apart from being absent from the forum myself. Unfortunately I couldn't spare enough time to be on the forum and reply to threads or interact with new members in the last two years and I will try and do that now but apart from that what else can we do to this forum to make it more lively.

It would be great to hear suggestions from members.

firstly we need to make this site more appealing..frankly speaking its ugly (sorry)..instead of putting links to all sub forums on the homepage why not create drop down menus. that makes it easier to search what ur looking for.
secondly though this isn't used much elsewhere..why not give incentives to biggest contributors and helpers instead of contests..not that only no of posts should be deciding factor, but how many times that post has been liked by others and how useful it is..something like that...then we also need to expand the content covered..include cameras, modems, create sub categories for tablets and stuff like that...

also there are so many restrictions on new members..honestly its a nightmare for newbies...heck i can't even pm the admin and mods forget other members..that too after so long..instead of 300 posts make it some 20-30posts like on other websites..same goes for sharing urls

I agree that restrictions on new members be reduced. 15 posts limit for posting links can remain. So can signature restrictions remain as they are today.

Here are a few suggestions from my side:

    (1) Let me be frank. No one is interested in helping others for free. What will a person get if he/she keeps coming back and helping other members? Obviously he won't get anything. So, my suggestion is that we should introduce a small Prize for the members like a gift of $2 on completing 300 posts or a gift of $5 on completing 500 posts. This won't be a big amount for Admin(Payer) but it will encourage the members to be regular on the forum.

    (2) As sharang said, restrictions on new members should be limited if we want new members because limitations irritate any new member.

    (3) We should try to get more Mods for the forum as once they become Moderator they will naturally keep coming back and will help other members.

That's it for now. Will post here if I found anything new.

The way I look at it is that you are looking for threads where you can post your links not the other way round. Promoting your website is a good idea but trying to make this forum your gate way for click through traffic is not. I am sure there are lots of threads on this forum that you could have linked to from your own blogs posts but is that the case? No. I am not asking you to do that but just putting things into perspective to make it easier for you to understand that what you are doing is called "spamming".

I am not discussing this furthur. You can scream your lungs out on your own blog.

You have a point there about the site's looks and all but we cannot change the structure of the forum as it comes pre built and customizing is going to cost a lot of money and time. I am not looking to throw money at this lack of participation problem because as soon as we stop throwing money at this problem it will again come back to haunt us. Your suggestion about having more sub forums is good but we already have the sections you have mentioned apart from cameras which is covered by the gadgets section and modems and routers section could be created if enough people agree or demand.

It will become a spamming fest here if we had such structure. I would have a word with Just4kix and Smoothie and see what they say.

The restrictions we have in place would only irritate people who come here to spam. I do believe that we have a few restrictions in place that might have acted as a barrier and I am working on removing some of them.

We dont need more moderators as we don't have that many posts every day. I would not like to have more moderators so we can get more activity. I would rather work on other improvements.

I somewhat disagree with the statement that "no one wants to work for free and should be paid for posting". When it comes to payment then there must be something worthwhile to be paid for. Who will keep tab on what post deserves payment and which does not? If we stated paying for all posts then I would agree with admin that this would become a spamming fest.

Secondly, I have seen many other forums.people come there to genuinely help others without expecting remuneration. This site is no exception. And it should remain that way.

Default A "Thanks Meter" should be there below avatar

    I have one suggestion :

    Giving Thanks
Every member would have a "Thanks Meter" below their avatar. Giving thanks is important. It lets people know that their work or answer is appreciated. It is a faster method of feedback than posting a reply like "Thanks for your answer!"

You would get 8 thanks per day, and they renew after 24 hours or so. Each thanks is independent of the others, so if you give someone a thanks at 3, and then another at 4, those will renew at 3 and 4 the next day. If you run out of thanks, then save that page in a new tab and give thanks later when you have one available.

    Getting Thanks
Here are the counts needed to get to the next bar.
    1st bar - 26
    2nd bar - 51
    3rd bar - 101
    4th bar - 201
    5th bar - 501
    6th bar - 1001
    7th bar - 2001
    8th bar - 5001
    9th bar - 8001
    Maxed! - 10000

Not that thanks would be an indication of a user's status or stature. Thanks don't really count for anything other than as a potentially wildly inaccurate measure of a member's ability to answer your question correctly.

I have seen this in another forum.

There has to be something else aswell that needs adding or changing. It is perhaps our basic Indian trait to get whatever help we can from a source and be short of the few words they should be writing saying they appreciate the efforts of those who helped. I am amazed at the 35-40k people who visit this place every single day and very conveniently move on after they have got what they came here looking for.
