Default New to Tata Photon max and new to wireless

I bought a tata photon max dongle for myself yesterday but i am not able to use it properly as i am new to wireless network:

    1) can anyone tell me how can i check my data usage?

    2) what speed does it offers? The coustumer care guy said "The speed is b/w 500kbps tp 6.1 mbps but when i am downloading any large file the speed is unstable and is b/w 20 kbps to 100 kbps and very few times cross 150kbps' wheres the fault?

For checking usage you could go to this page : tataphoton.com/myaccount-new-user.aspx and sign up. You would be able to see unbilled usage and all other info that you need on that portal.

The speed is a very dodgy issue when it comes to these wireless dongles. I some times get a constant 3mbps on my MTS connection and some times especially in the evenings I strugle to open Google home page. I am afraid we will have to live with this.

These CDMA plans are the cheapest ones for MTS, Reliance and Tata and even BSNL EVDO but speed is something we cannot complain about and complaining wont yield much result either.

I would suggest changing the MTU to correct value and see if that helps a bit.

That is a lot of money to pay for 2GB Any particular reason why you got that plan?

My MTNL broadband's speed is poor so needed a fast internet....I wasn;t aware of other plans soi took this one and some1 told me that tata's signal and strenght scores over all other wireless internet providers.

It is the max data a packet is allowed to carry so hight the MTU value higher the latancy but the amount of data that is pushed in a given time increases. If latancy is more important then speed then lower your MTU to something like a 1385 or 1390. You could even try reducing it to the levels of 800-900 and see how your connection behaves and if it doesnt work out good you can change it back to whatever it was No harm done. This is not something irriversible so play with it

If the MTU value is set higher then what your ISP allowes then your packets get fragmented and that slows down the whole process. Lower speeds and higher latancy and thats why we try finding the optimum levels.

That is costly, you could have got some other service provider with better plans? Why did you choose Tata?

So that basically means if i want to play any onlien game and have a good latency i sould lower the value and when i need speed i just put a higher value,

You could do that but I do not recomend changing it every time you are going to do a different thing. You could may be have a compromise between latancy and speed and set the MTU value say 50-60 lower then the max supported to get a better gaming experience.

I personally recomend 1365 MTU value for a decent gaming experience. If you are going to do some heavy duty downloads constantly then set it to highest MTU and there should be a bit of difference in speed that you would get.

Maybe you should ask to return it, I think some service providers allow return backs within a certain time period.

Why would he want to return it? He has the wifi model and it works great. There are plenty of data plans that he can choose from. It is not something he has to stick with for life.

well dude i just cant think of an answer! my photon gives me poor speed on my pc but when i tried my photon on a laptop by keeping it in different room what i observed was shocking. in some room the speed was very stable at 2.5-4mbps but in others it was horrible... its better u try MTS as it has cheaper plans as compared to tata every month u need to get a recharge done of atleast 400 rupees to carry forward ur data.. its abit expensive!!

i got my mtnl line changed and now its working fine i just use dongel in case i have a line fault etc.

i will strongly recommend that if your using pc go for wired broadband but if its for laptop then dongel is fine , as you can change your place to get some good quality signals
