Default No connection till date - paid on 17th June 06

On 17th June 06 in Bangalore, i paid Rs 699 for a Tata indicom broadband prepaid connection. It has been more than a month from then and the connection has not been installed yet. The initial promise was to install the connection within 10 working days. Later I was told that the company was going through some software upgradation and would take some more time to install the pending connection. Since then i must have called the customer service center at least 10 times, everytime getting a false reassurance that my complaint had been registered and the field engineer would contact me at the earliest. I even went up to the Tata website and got an email id of some Mr Suroor Hassan who is supposed to be the point of contact for Tata teleservices. I wrote to him about my grievance but have not received a response yet.

Let me also tell you that before applying for this connection i did read several nagative reviews about Indicom, but still went ahead with my application, reposing my faith in the Tata brandname. After having gone through this agonsing experience myself, i am sure now that each one of those negative reviews that i read (and i read many many of them) were indeed true.

For those of you who are looking for a new broadband connection - PLEASE DO NOT GO FOR TATA INDICOM. I chose to ignore the many reviews that i read and am repenting today - use my experience as a learning and keep away!!!!

For those of you who work for any of the Tata group companies, my submission is that Tata indicom is tarnishing the Tatas’ brand equity which has been established over decades. I sincerely think Tata should discontinue providing this service at least till the time it establishes the capabilities to provide basic services to its customers on time. Today after not having got the services for which i had paid Rs 699 a month back, i feel duped by Tata indicom - i sincerely believe the Tata brand deserves a better treatment than this. I really hope someone senior in the Tata group reads this and multiple such reviews that are floating around on internet and takes some action.

Unhappy sorry to hear the poor state of VSNL(tataindicom broadband)

Dishnet dsl was taken over by VSNL(central government)
but VSNL was privatised(disinvested) during the BJP's Regime and was taken over by TATA.

Now as per latest requirements(adsl 2+) the Software which was used to monitor, configure, their devices called DSLIMS(digital subscribers line intergrated management system <used by dishnet dsl>) was updated to a software more advanced than DSLIMS. So durin the migration from dslims to the latest software tata has lost a lot of customers to its competitors namely touchtel, bsnl, reliance etc.

Don't just ignore TATA INDICOM BROADBAND be'coz IT would the first company to provide ADSL 2+ (triple play ) in india before airtel or bsnl.

TATA WOULD BE WORKING VERY HARD to get back their customers. hope they do that
BEST OF LUCK TO THE GUYS WORKING FOR VSNL.

Its is possible to configure a bsnl's router to work with airtel broadband.

there is list of things that u must know before u start!!!

1.The ip of the router(mostly 192.168.1.1)

2.Admin password, so that u can log in make the changes(mostly the username would be admin and the password also admin)

3.An ethernet card on u desktop or laptop(regarding the wireless part, i would help u later)

4.A cat 5 utp patch cable(straight cable) that connects from ur router to ur workstation

5.The VPI(virtual path identifier) and VCI (virtual channel identifier)
in the case of bsnl it is 0(vpi) and 35(vci)
in the case of tataindicom broadband it is 0(vpi) and 32(vci)
ask ur airtel guys about the above and below
6.the dns servers ip addresses.

7.Ur router must be turned on(u can see the indicators on the router like power, wan, ppp, lan etc

8.Finally ur airtel broadband's user name and password.

Now into configuring

if ur machine has windows xp professional, right click "my network places" on ur desktop select properties. now if u have

installed ur NIC(network interface card or ethernet card) properly, u must see LOCAL AREA CONNECTION, right click it go to

properties, selet tcp/ip click properties. Now u would be seeing a window saying ip address, subnet mask, default gateway,

preferred dns servers address.

In the ip address type 192.168.1.x(x=2-254 not 1, because its the ip of the router) so u give 192.168.1.25

The subnet mask would come by default as 255.255.255.0(if not type it)

In the default gateway type 192.168.1.1(the ip of the router)

In the dns servers ip addresses type 202.145.184.13(primary)in the first blank spaces and type 202.56.230.5(secondary) in the

second blank spaces.{the above dns values are only applicable in CHENNAI [tamil nadu]

give ok

now once again right click "my network places" on ur desktop. select properties , again right click the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION

and select disable, again right click LOCAL AREA CONNECTION and select enable.

to check if u have configured ur ethernet card properly, Type "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" in the RUN dialog box. If everthing is

fine u must getting the messages that are shown below

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

to stop it from continuing press control+c.

If u get the below messages

request timed out
request timed out
request timed out
request timed out

then the ip address of ur gateway(router) is in the 192.168.1.x(but the last octet is not 1)

for this u have to reset ur router by pressing the reset button at the back side of the router using a pen tip or any pin.(by

the way the router must be turned on)

If u get the below messages

Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.

then the network cable(cat 5 utp patch cable) must be unplugged or ur router is in off state or the ip address of the router

is in a different network like say 192.168.0.x, 192.168.2.x this can be once again be sorted by reseting the router.

If u receive

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

then u have no problems regarding the ethernet card's configuration

Now the hard part configuring the router.

open Internet explorer or what ever browser software u have and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and click go(this will

open the web based configuration utility of the router)
don't forget to give the username as "admin" and password as "admin"

there will be wan, lan , etc

If the router has a quick configuration, then use it. Its for easy configuration

like there will be vpi, vci, encapsulation mode, ppp(ur airtel account's user name and password), dns server's ip address .

click submit and save ur changes and restart ur router.
now ur are good to browse

p.s IF UR NOT ABLE TO BROWSE OR HAVE SOME ISSUSES EMAIL ME AT MULLATHU@GMAIL.COM WITH THE TYPE OF ROUTER U HAVE (MODEL NO).hai,

Its is possible to configure a bsnl's router to work with airtel broadband.

Is the bill excessive? and if it is there is no reason why you shouldnt get a refund if the bills are not reasonable and correct.
There are a lot of isp employees aswell who visit this forum and at the moment we get aprox 1000 unique visitors ever day so The best thing to do would be write them an e-mail and post it here aswell and wait for the response and keep posting your communication here aswell so every one know what they are doing in response and if they are doing anything atall.
Please keep us posted.

Default What can we do about improving Tata VSNL?

I've had the same problems so many of you are complaing about. Tata's service is truly appalling, and like so many of you I was fooled by the incredible reputation of the Tata brand.

But, guys, let's have some creative ideas and action about what to do rather just post complaints on blogs.

Does contacting TRAI do any good? Is there a telecomms or broadband industry ombudsman? Does Tata corporate give any access? How about a group complaint to the Telecomm Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal?
