You don't need a modem if you are opting for a wired Reliance connection.
The wire connects directly to the port at the back of your PC.

Reliance is known to be hostile towards competing products. An apt example is CDMA phones, all CDMA phones are not compatible with Reliance. I mean they are technically compatible, but Reliance doesnt activate such phones. But Tata Indicom mobiles can be used with Reliance.

What is suggest is get in touch with Reliance WebWorld and present the situation before them. Hopefully it should be a positive response.

It works both ways. Even TATA handsets are not compatible with Reliance network. Even Virgin hansets do not run with TATA network, though legally they are one co.
But they are workable with little tweaks.

All Nokia CDMA Handsets are "Open" sets and work with any network. Now samsung has also come out with "open" CDMA sets. Spice and Fly are other Co. having "open" CDMA set.

As for the original issue, it seems that the modem in question is TATA Plug2Surf CDMA modem (USB Modem). It can be worked on Reliance network. but would require some unofficial tweaks.
Pl. search for it in the RIM users forum.

I am an active member in rimweb forum and have seen many complaining about Reliance locking the handsets. According to that portal Tata doesnt lock the handsets. Inserting a RUIM of Reliance in Tata phone will make it work, but the opposite is not possible.

Like mentioned Virgin and Tata Indicom are also not compatible either.

dear cool techie, I am also an active member of that forum (though with a diff. userID) and I have seen many posts regarding how even TATA sets can not be directly worked with R-CDMA UIMs. Only older TATA handsets work directly with R-CDMA UIM. The newer ones need to be "tweaked"

Both operators give "Huawei EC325 USB Modem", so it would work.

You just need a firmware flash.
