Thumbs up TATA shutting down on all low speed plans..

its been months now that tata indicom has increased the entry level speed for new customers ... i.e a minimum of 384 kbps ... but the old users who were using low speed connections still could renew their connections at low speed coupons like 128/64/256 kbps... now tata has stopped providing all such coupons and are forcing customers to move on to high-speed plans ... at least in kolkata this is the scenario ... many ppl don't really need the high speed connections as they don't download much .... its kinda expensive for them...

Just curious...how much speed do you get out of 384 kbps.
Tried 3 isps so far & tat isn't one of them.

i checked tata plan's page and found that they are about to lauch another high speed plan which is Pilot 4Mbps and cutting down the low speed plans is a good step.

ATHUL4R on 256UL plan i get more thn 300kbps all the time (day/nite)
and one of my friend is using 384UL plan and gets about 400-450kbps

i agree ... even i am using 384 ul plan and get almost about 400kbps ... but the problem is with low speed users , who dont download much. they are being forced to move to high speed plans and pay more ...

This is called upgrading standards, do you know in india we still survive on all these 64kbps, 128kbps and slow connection and in fact if you check some other local cable ISP's like hotwire and all they are selling 96kbps plan as broadband which is 100% against standards, so in basic terms they are killing standards coz any connection below 256kbps can not come under broadband tarrif/ plan.

In UK and US now the basic plan starts from 1Mbps and in there plans they really don't include any plan which says 256kbps or 128kbps so if we need to meet the global standards we really need to welcome such steps.

To stay in race we also need to make some changes and need to move fast. Its already high time and i think TRAI should wipe off or stop all those crappy providers from trading who are still selling 64kbps plans and all.

You are saying to wipe out all 64kbps and 128kbps plans and comparing our broadband scenario to US and Uk. But one difference is there and thats price difference. In us you pay around 10$ for 1mbps unlimited ( around 550 Rupees inclusind tax) and here you pay
1000 rupees pu tax for 384kbps.

I am not saying that low plans should not be washed out. But higher bandwith plans should also be made cheaper simultaneously. to make broadband more affardable to entry customers.

The issue is a delicate one. Many can go about arguing it. Whether bandwidth should be raised or prices should be lowered etc etc.

My suggestion, be content with whatever we are enjoying today and pray that the situation may change someday. Its really unfair to compare the broadband packages in between the countries. And please do not ask me why.

Its all in the numbers game when it comes to pricing mate...how many internet users are there in US and how much competition is there for the same..very high ratio so the amount required to purchase bandwidth is equally shared among the vast numbers of users..hence the cheaper rates..whereas..here except for the cities and there is'nt such high competition for connections...most people make do with cyber cafes...so unless the penetration of internet increases..the prices wont decrease.

I may like to know why we can not compare BB packages between countries.
BSNL and some other providers are trying to reduce rates so that everyone can use BB but still it will take some time, please remember old days when one hour surfuing was about 90 rupees and then DSL Dishnet came in picture with reduced surfing rates of rs 60per hours, so i think its still better and atleast now we are leading somewhere.

yes, indeed this is. actually users like us who use internet so much and download so much always welcome high-speed plans. but i posted this thread because, 2 of my friends of my locality, faced this problem. they just used a tata unlimited 64kbps connection and it used to cost about 300pm. they use internet for very milited purposes like checking mails, chatting occassionally. but now after tata's denial of providing those low speed recharge coupons for already existing low-speed users have forced them to leave the connection. why should such limited users pay more for high speed connections which they dont need. no need of providing these low-speed connections by the name of Broadband but these connections still serve the purpose of lot of people.
