Angry what is this BITES issue ??

    hi everyone,

unfortunately this is my 1st post...i never expected to be here but with due to some gr8 service i am here.

I had TATAIndicom for 3 yrs and used 256kbps and 512kbps plans then shifted to Reliance WiMax and now back to TATA.

Today i got my connection. My plan is 1Mbps at 1:4 (unlimited), i should get max 250kb/s speed but i am getting only upto 110kb/s speed, i.e 1:8 related speed. I contacted customer care and they gave me some horrible and pathetic explanation.

    They said:

You are getting 110kb/s and ur ratio is 1:4 so if u multiply 110x4=440. This is good speed. Because we are giving MEGA BITES PER SECOND and the downloading speed is KILO BYTES PER SECOND.

I tried to explain then, how they used to calculate earlier as i was there customer for 3yrs and also how others calculate. 1024/4= 250kb/s

Please explain me this concept, for the 1st time in my life i am hearing this thing.

    Regards

thanks for the reply but thats not i want... i want to know if my plans says i get 1:4 in 1Mbps plan then how much should i get in KB/s.

speedtest.net and various other speed test website are showing upto 120KB/s. But that is if u have 1:8 plan.

As per common calculation i should get 1024 divided by 4 = 250KB/s. I what to confirm from you this and also want to know what TATA customer care people are trying to say??

    All Bakwas.
I am on BSNL Home 750 Plan upto 512 Kbps , but as a new connection
upto 2 Mbps speed allowed for 15 days.
I am getting speed reaching 2 Mbps also Average 1 Mbps.
What Tata is talking is contention ratio.
The speed will reduce if more people are connected in the same server at same time.
May be they claim they connect only four users for a contention ratio of 1 :4
    but could be more.
    wait....

If you see a contention ratio of, say, 50:1, this means that 50 subscribers share that bandwidth. The more subscribers sharing the bandwidth then the slower your connection will be. 50:1 is common for a residential package. However you may prefer to pay more for a service with a lower contention ratio.

Business packages often have lower contention ratios, eg of 20:1 or even 10:1, because it is essential to them that they have a continually fast service.
The contention ratio certainly isn't the only factor determining download speed - this could be down to the distance from your exchange, or to another factor - but it could be part of the cause of slow speeds, or the main cause, particularly if your sharing subscribers are heavy users......

    Try tcp/ip optimizer from speedguide.net.
