Default Quite satisfied with Tata Indicom Broadband

I was quite apprehensive upon reading the stories on this website, and kept a BSNL Home 250 connection as a backup before ordering a Tata Indicom connection in Chennai. I needed a fast business class connection for my work. I must say that the for the last month or so, the Tata Indicom connection has been extremely stable, with no disconnections, and really good speeds (as tested at Speakeasy - Speakeasy, Inc. - Broadband, Voice and Data Services New York servers). I get a download speed of 1.45Mbps and upload speed of 380 Kbps to New York, which is quite good in my opinion.

I hope it stays this way. Maybe the Tata Indicom folks at Chennai are more competent than in other cities. I wanted to post my experience to make sure that at least the satisfied customers do get to speak up since these forums are usually more likely to be frequented by complainers.

Its good to hear that you are happy with your tata indicom broadband connection and yes you are right in saying that all those who come here are mostly the ones with complaints and no one ever has a good word to share.
I am happy that you came forward to share your good experience and hope others will follow suit.

    Default Corollary

I wanted to have two ISPs since it was critical for my telecommuting work, and had heard from a neighbor that Tata Indicom (VSNL) had been quite reliable. If BSNL or the other ISP were to go down, then I could continue working on the other. I must also say that BSNL is quite reliable so far. Unfortunately Airtel was not able to provide service in my area in Chennai (near Vadapalani), and Hathway cable was a bit expensive, so I was forced to turn to Tata Indicom.

It took 3 days for the Tata Indicom folks to provide the connection, which I considered reasonable. Even in the US, it takes about 2 days for the DSL/Cable company to provide a connection. And so far, on the business 5000 plan, I have been able to work without a single hitch for the last month and a half. When talking to customer care, I get the feeling that if a serious problem were to arise, they would not be able to help me. Luckily I am somewhat knowledgeable and can figure most things out by myself. I took a router connection so my Linux box would not need any additional configuration. I plan to continue to evaluate both BSNL and VSNL for another couple of months before deciding to discontinue one of these, and keeping just one after I have a good feel of the reliability.

On the downside, it is atrocious that customers in India have to pay 25$ for a 2Mbps connection with a 5GB download limit. In the US, with a Comcast cable connection, I was paying $45 for an 8Mbps unlimited connection. I think consumers in India are really exploited in general, where they pay high prices for low quality compared to developed countries. And I thought India was a poor country. Why are prices so high? There seems to be some competition at least so it is quite puzzling. I would have expected download limits to be at least 30-40 GB for a $25 connection instead of a paltry 5GB. And a 1Mbps unlimited connection costs $80/month!

but whatever..they are not bad as to give even one try..i just missed buying their connection in august because at that time they were not very popular and their unlimited plan was just launched..i chose BSNL broadband at that time and i think i could have switched to TATA as their speeds are better than BSNL..but now i have read about airtel on this forum and thinking to change my plan with airtel instead..
