Default speed+

Well, I'm a Tata Indocom Walky user. I installed Speed+, and there's definitely some improvement. So I did some digging, and here's what I found out:
- It's based on a product from a company called Venturi wireless, which has developed a custom transport protocol (like TCP) called Venturi Transport protocol(vTP).
- All your connections are proxied through a Venturi server hosted by tata indicom; The software installs a Windows service, which intercepts all your Web/Email/IM communication, and proxies them through the Venturi server.
- The software works by compression techniques, and enhanced protocol design.
Caveat: Your requests go through another server, so there may be privacy issues; but guess what, teh ISP can already see all your requests, so may not be a big deal.
- As far as I know, there's no spyware or any such thing.

Hope this helps

Default usb modem speed

The 155kbps is total speed i.e. download and upload. Realistically, the download speed is about 5 to 10kbps and upload is about 70kbps (even after speed+). I asked the sales manager about this and he said this how it works.

Default I used to get download 2.5Kbps

I picked Plug2Surf last week after long, unfruitful waits of wired access from BSNL and Airtel.
Got attracted to the ads where Tata Indicom claimed speeds of 153KBps. The best speed I have seen is about 20kbps. Most of the time the speeds are around 2.5Kbps. It is really frustrating because to view and respond to one email on Google would take about 20mins.
I complained couple of times and the technicians came over my place with their laptops to verify the same. Even they saw the speeds of 2.5KBPs and claimed that this the best they can offer (and surprisingly no one seem to complain).

Unfortunately this has been the best available solution and I continue using the same . Just hoping BSNL to provide me a connection at their earliest.

Default Plug2Surf: Data Card versus USB Modem

Can somebody tell me if there are any differences that I should watch out for between a Data Card and a USB Modem. I had asked for a USB Modem but received a Data Card instead.

* Is the Data Card compatible on all laptops?
* Is the speed the same in both?
* Does the difference in size result in any inconvenience? (I guess not).

Thanks in advance.
Narayan.

If you can still return it then I would suggest you to go and get a reliance data card instead or the reliance usb thing which is far much better then tata. Tata indicom's plug to surf has a very poor record and the connectivity is not at all upto the mark.. this is why I switched to reliance which has been working great for months now without any problems atall.

Otherwise I dont think there is any performance issue with data cards.. they work as well as the usb thing would.. The only difference being.. you cant use the data card on a desktop unless you get an adapter which is not available in India yet.

Default Plug2Surf: Data Card versus USB Modem

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply.

I had used a USB Modem last month, and I am reasonably satisfied with it (even without Speed+). That's why didn't risk trying out Reliance, all the more so because a friend who stays close by isn't happy with it. But, as others have mentioned in this thread, it all depends on where the tower is. This Tata USB Modem becomes useless even at the other end of my apartment complex, so it must be very sensitive.

Since, there is no difference between the Data Card and USB Modem, I probably need not go into the hassles of getting it exchanged. Shall give my feedback after a couple of months of using it.

Thanks once again,
Narayan.

Hi,
I 've been using tata's USB for the past 2 months and since the network is pretty good in Mumbai there have not been any connectivity issues. I ve used it for 8-10 hr sessions without a drop.

Speed is around 90KBPS. Pretty good for a dial up.

I used Tata's plug to surf for 1 month... I've used Reliance USB modem also... Look the basic thing is to understand the fact which one has a better signal in ur area... If you travel a lot with your lappy... then I would vote for Reliance.. It has better connectivity...

My experience with Tata hasn't been good though... Cuz the USB modem stopped connecting after 1 month of use... It always gives me Error 678- unable to reach the host... I took it to Tata Indicom hub... but they referred me to their service center... I still have to go their to repair my modem...
