Thread: New Wi-Max Internet connection from TATA(VSNL).

I have applied for new Wi-Max Internet connection from TATA Indicom (VSNL).
They assured to install before new year.I have choosen 256kbps, prepaid plan. I am exited to see how it works.

Did any have any comments/suggestions about Wi-Max Internet connection??

Did any one have taken TATA Indicom Wi-Max connection ? any comments about your experience?

I have no experience with Wi-Max but before signing up make sure of the following:

a) You get a clear signal at your place
b) Connections don't get dropped too often
c) If you use VPN, the connection is stable

It is launched on 20th of this month. And i am lucky to apply for connection on the same day..,

WiMAX - Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, the anytime, anywhere, wireless broadband technology also known as the IEEE 802.16 standard, is the example. The mobile, or 16e, version of WiMAX, has recently been included by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in the set of standards known as IMT-2000.


This means it can compete with the so-called `3G' or third generation cellular technologies, being deployed by mobile telephony providers to provide Internet services at broadband speeds.


That will pit 16e WiMAX, directly against the two incumbent broadband cellular technologies: CDMA 2000 in the case of CDMA users and WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) - specifically HSPA or High Speed Packet Access - in the case of GSM providers.

Dear friends..,

Finaly i got my WI-MAX internet connection, !!!!

The connection is good, it really works fine..,

I tried downloading two movies, it worked well. Torrents also very worked well.

..

On some occations, i was experiencing ip addressing issue. My comp was not able to get DHCP ip from VSNL server.
I raised a complaint and it got resolved, since then no issue occured.

Do any one has WI-MAX connection and experiencing problems ??

none of the operaters hav even reached 3g in the case of gsm!!so if WiMAX can compete with 3.5G(HSPA) then its definetly the way to go!atleast till all the homes are connected via fiber optic cables!!

I am using the Wimax connection from Tata-VSNL from last week. Connection speeds are what they are promised. No disconnections although due to the ports being blocked i am unable to make use of any p2p applications.

I am one of the first 100 customers for Wi-max, the day i got it i started downloading all the stuff, it works fine.

Even my p2p application works fine.

Are you really getting the promised speed when downloading ??
(Dont take into account of speed test from websites)

I enquired with tata they are asking me to pay 4700 including tax in advance for four months, for a post paid connection so I didnt apply for it. They dont have difference between the post paid and prepaid connection.

Praveen - Which city are you in? Could you please tell me if one needs to be around a hotspot area to receive connectivity, or does it work everywhere?

As far as I know, the installation/maintenence of the router is not done by VSNL. How easy (or tough) it was to install this wimax?

Did they offer some hardware-lock or is the system open to hackers (I have heard that hackings of bandwidth happened in B'lore!)?

They have given me a DHCP IP Address, they could not provide static ip address becoz, if one tower is not working, the other nearby tower can provide signal. More redunduncy. good na..,


p2p application like bittorrent, it uses peer-2-peer connection..

I am in bangalore. connection works every where i believe.

VSNL installed a fixed router and they take care of it for any issues. haking bandwith i dont think so..

i have applied for a wi-max connection from vsnl . they assured me that i could use this connection to connect to a wi-fi so two laptops can access this simultaneously. Any one tried this before ?

My STRONG RECOMMENDATION: STAY AWAY FROM TATA INDICOM WIMAX. These clueless jerks have no idea on what they are doing. I had my connection installed a week ago. All fine for 5 days. Then on friday, I could not browse (though surprisingly, other port traffic was going through). Raised a complaint - no response for 2 days. Called them 8 times. On saturday afternoon, even the other port traffic stopped. Status is showing NOT OPER on my connection - but signal strength is great!!! Been talking to clueless idiots in their call center who make all the right noises about this being “ESCALATED” to be fixed. Not even the courtesy of a call back to update progress. As of now, the conneciton is down, Tata Indicom has encashed my 16,180 cheque (for 4 months advance for post paid 1MBPS Infinty plan) - and I am screwed. I am going to the consumer courts to get my money refunded.

I am also thinking of going for a Wi-Max static ip connection in Thavarkere (maruthinagar), Bangalore. But he wants me to pay 4400/-(4months advance). So rethinking if its worth...
