Default Sudden problem in downloading through Utorrent

I have been using Tata indicom broadband (256Kbps unlimited ) since last two months in mumbai (chembur). Though the connection has been working with an average download speed. Since last 4-5 days the download through Utorrent has been restricted. The download speeds sucks and I am not able to download those files from utorrent and bittorrent also.

It seems Tata indicom has enabled some firewall wherein U torrent is not able to get incoming connections.

Is there anyone who has got similar problem and how did u get it resolved. The Tata Indicom call center says they are not aware of any problems wherein there repair technicians has agreed there is some problem caused at their end.

    Some standard questions:

    a) Are you getting enough seeds - over 10 at least?
    b) Is your port open? Do you get the green tick arrow in uTorrent?
    c) What are the upload speeds?

Finally, tracker web sites keep a track on upload and download ratio. You must seed quite a lot and then you get amazing download speeds. For example, when I was downloading six months ago, I used to get 8-10 KB/s as download speeds with all of the above. When my seed ratio reached about .7, I started getting good speeds.

Tracker web sites keep track of seeding by MAC id and not by ip-address.

    @BlacK_rozE,

First things first. Please learn to write properly. You may find it cool to mix CAPS and Small case letters in any way that your mind fancies. But believe me, it is very irritating to read and comprehend. However, I shall let that pass this time.

To answer your queries to my questions, one by one:

    a) If you do not enough seeds, then you will not get good speeds. It is essential that you get large number of seeds to your torrent. It is possible that some old stuff will have less number of seeds. You cannot do anything about it - you just have to hope. As a rule of the thumb new/popular downloads will have plenty of seeds.

    b) You must do port forwarding in your modem. Please know your model number and refer this excellent site on how-to do this: PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

    c) Upload and download is controlled by port-forwarding. If your port is not open, you cannot connect to others to get the stuff that they have (you download); neither can others cannot connect to your machine to get stuff (you upload to them).

Tata Indicom or any other ISP does not block ports. These ports are ports (gates) on your machine. No one can block them or open them. You alone have to do it. Please refer to the "Broadband How To" section on an article that I wrote on this.

    Hi Black_Roze,

Thank you for writing in a proper manner. You must get out of your (obnoxious) habbit quickly. Also stop writing in SMS like language - another nasty habbit that will lead to problems later on in life. Believe me these habits are not cool - whatever others may tell you. These are extremely irritating habits. When writing a message on cell phone sometimes it is OK but not when you are writing in forums. This is not a chat session.

OK. Enough said. Back to your problem ...

It appears that what you get is a shared connection. The modem and switch are controlled by your ISP. If you do not have a modem at home, there is nothing you can do. If there is an option for you, please switch to Airtel or BSNL. Then only you will be able to do port forwarding and get good speeds for downloading.

Please note that port forwarding is only required for torrents and online games. It is not required for standard downloading for which you will get whatever speeds that are promised to you. You can also hunt for software and movies on rapidshare. You can open a premium account with them after paying something like $5 and then you have no download restrictions. Please ask others about Rapidshare - I am not an expert here as I never used Premium service from RS.

Also .. itz been less than a week i applied for tata indicom ... airtel/bsnl are not avilable in my area ...

ok listen this ... i'm connected to internet through my laptop ...

    I downloaded sum antivirus updates .. sum 4 - 5 mb .. @ 85-90 kbps

Which is really good during the day time .. is it coz sumthing in the antivirus is blocking it ??

i've the same anti-virus in my Desktop machine ...

Itz strange ... really wierd ...

They are not blocking the ports. But they are not opening it up. See, by default, all ports are closed. Some ports need to be opened for torrent and online games. Which port is being used by utorrent by you?

Are your friends residing in the same building and using the same switch?

I am also not able to comprehend the exact physical connection at your home. I know of three connection types:

    1. Via telephone: BB is provided thru fixed landline telephone cable, e.g., BSNL, Airtel, Reliance Broadnet, etc. You get an ADSL modem to connect to BB. Incidently Tata Indicom also provides BB service in this fashion.

    2. Via Cable: BB is provided by a TV like cable, e.g., Hathway, Sify, etc. You get a Cable BB modem for this purpose.

    3. WiMax or EDVO: Signal is wireless from a public wi-fi tower in the vicinity, e.g. Reliance Wireless, Tata Wimax, etc.

The way you have explained, is totally unknown to me or you have not exactly explained it properly.

For example, how is your connection setup? Can you login to the router (whereever it is) via http://192.168.1.1

Also, please run the command 'ipconfig /all' in cmd window and paste the results here.

@saurav_kataruka, there is no need to bump dead threads. Bump them only if you too are facing a similar issue.

Nope. The ISP has to be blamed for it.

It's so friggin obvious. TATA WiMAX behaves like a female having PMS, very moody. If it feels like it, gives me good speed on utorrent but most of the times the torrents don't work man.

Even though the file may have tons of seeds, utorrent is not able to connect to it. I've never ever seen the green tick while on WiMAX. I'm starting to miss my BSNL connection so bad, it was so reliable. But of course, you can't get a new connection without setting up the phone first, that's why fukkin Indicom:double ****: came into the picture.

They don't provide a modem, so port-forwarding is impossible.
