Default How good is Tata Sky DTH?

Tata Sky DTH is one of the pioneering DTH services in India. Among the first few DTH players Tata Sky was launched in 2006. Tata Sky is a joint venture between the Tata Group of companies and the Star Group. This DTH service makes use of the brand name UK owned SKY TV. Though Tata Sky is one of the earliest DTH players, you can find Tata Sky in relatively few homes in India. The obvious reason is the cost. While all the other DTH service providers modified their pricing structure to the expectations of the Indian TV viewers, Tata Sky is yet to match the expectations of the Indian mass.

It tries to survive through expensive advertisements. It is yet to penetrate the market. As more number of DTH service providers come into the market it is only going to get difficult for Tata Sky to get the market share and to penetrate further. The new players will make their services more enticing and also cheaper to get hold of the market as they enter like what Sun Direct DTH did. Unless Tata Sky reduces its cost it will find the battle really tough. It is best to do it now rather than wait for the new players like Videocon come into the picture.

In terms of service and support Tata Sky offers reasonable services though it is not top notch. In 2008, it introduced recording facility to its services. With this new feature we can record up to 45 hours of video and watch it anytime. They hoped that this would offer them a breakthrough in the market. But again cost was one of the major constraining factors. This was primarily targeting the affluent and the elite. This group forms only a minor portion of the television viewers in India. The majority of TV fans in India belong to the middle class families so if any DTH service provider is wants to capture the market, they will have to target the middle class families.

One of the hallmarks of Tata Sky is that it has many interactive services. Those who can afford the high price can indeed enjoy these active services. Some of the active services include the following – Actve Mall, Actve Wizkids, Actve Stories, Actve Learning, Actve Topper, Actve Games, Actve Darshan, Actve Sports, Actve Matrimony, Actve Cooking, Actve Astrology, Actve Star News etc. These interactive services try to cater to all age groups and people with varied taste. This gives really a nice touch to the packages of Tata Sky.

In terms of channel packages, Tata Sky needs little more flexibility. Little more thinking needs to be put into the forming of these packages. Interestingly, the Superbrand council has chosen Tata Sky as the Super Brand for 2009-2010. There are number of customers that complain about poor picture quality by Tata Sky. So before throwing in your money try to find a friend who already uses Tata Sky and proceed if he or she recommends it.

Tata sky is very costly, having costly packages (monthly and yearly).
Tata sky have less no of channels in all.
    Less regional channels
less music channels (Lack of good music channels).
Most of the interactive services are paid.
    No offers for new subscribers.

WOW! you have written a big post! The thing is, yes, it is true that Tata Sky is the pricier amongst the DTH services. However, it is the best in terms of service and quality. The only other DTH, which comes close is Airtel Digital Tv.

I came across an article which I shall post soon, in which they clearly stated that they will not reduce the cost but try to add more services. Let's see what happens. I was one of the "original" subscribers of Dish TV and have such a bad experience that I am not going anywhere near it and nor will I recommend it to anyone. Go got Tata Sky or ADTV.

I am fairly OK with DishTV - quality is acceptable even on 110" projection, quantity is quite appealing especially with recent channel additions.

My only complaint is that they have "effectively halved" the content of the child connection (for multiple TVs).

Maybe they were bad a couple of years ago - not any more.

That said, TS is slightly better in quality. I really do not care for Active channels - I don't get time to watch regular channels.

    Tata Sky:

    Pros:

    - Very Good Picture and Sound Quality.
    - User Friendly Interface and Controls
    - Very Good Scheduling of Programs. (You can see the Schedule of next 7 days for all channels.)

    Cons:

    - A bit Costly
    - Rain Outages
    - Servicing is very expensive after warranty period.

^ Rain Outage cannot be considered as a "Cons" vis-a-vis other DTH.

My DTH dealer, deals with DishTV, TataSky and BigTV. He told me that BigTV is the worst of the lot. For instance, when you change channels, there is along delay.

I have not seen Airtel DTH (or any other) in action, but out the above three, TataSky has the best user interface, control, and quality. Unfortunately it is a tad expensive.

I use Dist TV and in this while changing the channels there will be delay for 3 sec . It really frustrates when by mistake you go to other channel and then again come back ..
This is using direct channel change ie put channel number and change.

Now by just normal prog + / - feature its quick
The time it takes to start is very annoying it takes almost 1 to 1.5 min i can boot my pc within that time

I have been using TataSky for almost 20 months. Till now, no issues faced.
I can give 9.5/10 for TataSky.

Regarding the cost factor, Its a bit costly. But quality things come @ higher price.

& some people here have complained that TataSky offers less number of channels. I really wonder that will we have time to watch all those channels, if all channels are provided by TataSky.

Currenlty Tatasky is providing some 100+ channels, out of which I watch hardly < 20 ~ 30 channels.

    * BIG TV is using the MPEG-4 technology which provides more space to carry channels then MEPG2. At the moment BIG TV channels providing 186 TV channels and 10 radio channels. They also have plan to add more then 250 channels in next few months. The MPEG Compression will allow space for much more channels as compared to Dish TV and Tata Sky.
    * BIG TV has better picture quality then any other DTH. You can’t find pixellation problems on any channels and really enjoy digital quality. Sounds also better then other DTH providers due it being of Digital Quality, one can honestly say that Big TV can promote true DVD quality pictures as well as DVD quality sound (Although not the best, but still good)
    * Their starting offers and packages are better then other DTH and provide more channels. Which will mean we will get more while paying less! Reliance is known to crush the market this way and they’re doing nothing different.
    * One of the big advantage of BIG TV is they have all popular channels except Sports channel in their base pack which only cost Rs 175/month. This package contains all of the most popular channels
    * You can enjoy crystal clear picture quality with BIG TV.
    * You can enjoy 12 channels on one screen with their Select option, which means there will be no more troublesome channel switching.
    * During rain, BIG TV’s signals are working better then other DTH and you hardly found Signals loss. This is because Big TV has learned from the experience of Tata Sky and DishTV about how to prevent signal loss in rain.
    * You have detailed EPG for 2 days right now and it will be 7 days soon. You will also be able to set reminders for programs seven days in advance so you will never forget or miss another program again!

see star plus logo on top right and see, the logo is crisp and sharp, that same logo in dish and tata sky blurs a bit.

The logo and picture in Tata sky are sharper and Crisper than this.

ookla, when you copy - paste something from other sites - provide the source link. you simply copy-pasted from another forum.

I can give you hundreds of sources on the internet where Tata sky is rated better than Big TV. I bet you have never used Tata sky yourself.

    Active services

Tata Sky has the largest number of Active Services compared to the other two companies Big TV and Dish TV. However, according to users, the Active Services are not worth all that investment and instead the company should focus on increasing regional channels at the same cost.

    Signal quality

Tata Sky has the best signal quality, when compared with the other two companies. The STB interface provided by Tata Sky is also comparatively better than both Dish TV as well as Big TV.

    Referral schemes

Tata Sky has a referral scheme going on currently, where a person who refers someone will get two months’ viewing of the channels free of cost while the person referred will get a month’s view of channels free.

    Website usability

In terms of user-friendliness of websites, Tata Sky tops the list. Big TV has an interactive site but does not offer much information for the user to use. Dish TV has a comprehensive site but navigation is extremely difficult and categorization is not good. The payment section of the Dish TV website is very amateurish in design when compared to the others Big TV and Tata Sky.
Dish TV vs Tata Sky vs Big TV

Which is better tata sky , big tv or dish tv.which one i should go for. i am very confused? - Yahoo! Answers India

Tata Sky vs Dish TV vs Big TV

Being a DTH user over a year now, I have used Tata Sky, Dish TV, Big TV till date. May be next review would also include Airtel I wont get into the details of what are the benefits or disadvantages of all the 3, but i will make an attempt to provide you a brief overview of Tata Sky review v/s Dish TV review v/s Big TV review

Let me take dish tv first. When it was launched, it was a perfect product for early adopters. There was no comparison untill Tata Sky came into the picture. But overall Dish TV services are average. Their customer care is a bit slow, although they have a huge network. Audio video quality definitely better than cable tv. They came up with lot of new features after Tata Sky. During rains, it takes time to get connected again with the satellite.

Tata Sky was expected to outplay Dish TV and it actually did it. Not in terms of numbers. Dish tv still has a larger base due to first mover advantage. But it terms of picture quality or audio quality, Tata Sky is much better. Even in other areas like customer care, they ensured minimal dissatisfaction. Tata sky customer service is very quick in solving issues. Another very interesting feature is their interactive tv (actve sports, actve darshan, actv cooking actve news etc). Although everyone may not like all the interactive channels, they are meant for specific age groups. During rains, it is comparatively better than dish tv.

Then came the big tv. They launched the product and as usual reliance company they are targetting everyone around. They came with mpeg 4 technology but its a compressiontechnology and has nothing to do with video and audio quality (which initially most of the people were under that impression). However, their packagesare comparatively cheaper but where big tv lacks is the customer service and has poor quality of STB.

Overall, amongst all the 3 service providers, i was more satisfied with Tata Sky. As i said Tata Sky has positioned themselves as premium service provider whereas dish tv and big tv are more popular in masses. Its upto you, how you perceive things ad which products & services you want to buy. But by sheer comparison numbers, Tata Sky scores above Big Tv and Dish Tv.

BIG TV STB has random problems. Possibly because I was trying it when it was still in Beta stages? However all the problems have since been reported and most likely would have been fixed by now.
Channel navigation is slower, it takes a little more time to browse through them.
BIG TV logo is quite big, although it would be corrected in future.

I have not tried BigTV but my dealer told me to stay away from BigTV and he deals with all the three mentioned here (Dish/TS/Big). He is a very old friend and he would not advise me something incorrect.

As far as content goes, at the moment, DishTV shows more channels than any other provider.

Reliance's Bigtv use MPEG-4 compression, which will allow it to pack twice as many TV channels per transponder, compared to the older MPEG-2 technology deployed by DishTV and TataSky.
As a direct consequence, Bigtv 8 Measat, MPEG-4 deployed transponders can carry more channels than the 12 transponders on TataSky.
MeaSat-3 has 12 Ku Band transponders, and the Antrix-Measat agreement includes the option for Antrix to lease additional transponders, if required.
Maran's Sun Direct DTH has also deployed MPEG-4 compression.
MPEG-4 can be deployed on any satellite transponder, but requires MPEG-4 Satellite receivers which are currently not only in short supply globally, but also cost twice as much compared to MPEG-2 transponders. Most MPEG-4 satellite receivers are backward compatible, and can receive MPEG-2 transmissions. As a result, TataSky and DishTV have the option to deploy; in future; MPEG-4 STBs for (Bandwidth hungry) High Definition TV (HDTV) Transmissions, for Premium service customers.

BIG TV USES MPEG-4 TECHNOLOGY WHICH GIVES BETTER PICTURE QUALITY THAN MPEG-2 WHICH CURRENTLY TATA AND DISH TV ARE USING IF TATA HAVE TO EMPLOY MPEG-4 THEN THEY HAVE TO REPLACE ALL THE STB'S WHICH THEY HAVE GIVEN TO ALL CUSTOMERS.

MPEG-4 COMPRESSION IS BETTER THAN MPEG-2 COMPRESSION

i just pasted the picture screen shot because i don't have time to connect my dvd recorder to STB and burn a dvd then load into pc then take screen shot! i have business to look after.

yes reliance big tv have disadvantages like laggy STB slow prog navigation recharge problem etc, just leave all that apart and concentrate on "picture quality" after all the main reason i disconnected my old coaxial cable after that sky and switched to BIG TV because of picture quality.

main thing is u like Tata broadband and tata dth services and i like Reliance broadband and Reliance dth services and both are good in their own ways.

But, you are being biased towards Reliance in everything.

dude Reliance is not giving me money to support or publish good info about their products and i am not biased with reliance,i was just telling u what type of tech they are using to employ DTH and u r taking it wrong.

dude MPEG-4 gives better quality just read the info below its taken from Wikipedia.

MPEG-2: Transport, video and audio standards for broadcast-quality television. MPEG-2 standard was considerably broader in scope and of wider appeal – supporting interlacing and high definition. MPEG-2 is considered important because it has been chosen as the compression scheme for over-the-air digital television ATSC, DVB and ISDB, digital satellite TV services like Dish Network, digital cable television signals, SVCD, and DVD.

MPEG-4: MPEG-4 uses further coding tools with additional complexity to achieve higher compression factors than MPEG-2.[7] In addition to more efficient coding of video, MPEG-4 moves closer to computer graphics applications. In more complex profiles, the MPEG-4 decoder effectively becomes a rendering processor and the compressed bitstream describes three-dimensional shapes and surface texture.[7] MPEG-4 also provides Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) which provides the facility to use proprietary technologies to manage and protect content like digital rights management.[8] Several new higher-efficiency video standards (newer than MPEG-2 Video) are included (an alternative to MPEG-2 Video), notably.

for more info on MPEG's read here Moving Picture Experts Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

only Sun DTH, Aitel digital TV and Reliance Big tv is using MPEG-4, if MPEG-2 gives better quality then why they deployed MPEG-4?

I don't love big tv that much nor reliance is paying me to promote their DTH.

things i don't like in BIG TV

    1, stb hangs frequently
    2,channel navigation sucks big time
3,annoying big tv logo on top left on Tata its on down right and also its visibility is low.
4,once ur pack expires it takes 6 hours to resume so u have to be in continuity, once i delayed for 1 day and recharged via cell phone it took 6 hours to activate!!! damn that was annoying.
    5, poor cust care

things i like in Big Tv

1,fantastic picture quality if u don't believe then go to retailer and compare it with Dish tv and tata Sky on same channel.(but don't compare with sun DTH and Airtel DTH because both use same Mpeg-4 compression as reliance)
    2,higher no of channels.
3, superb sound on channels like mtv and channel V,no hissing in sound when volume is high.
    4,latest Mpeg-4 video type broadcast.
