Tata Sky DTH is one of the pioneering DTH services in India. Among the first few DTH players Tata Sky was launched in 2006. Tata Sky is a joint venture between the Tata Group of companies and the Star Group. This DTH service (best DTH service in India) makes use of the brand name UK owned SKY TV. Though Tata Sky is one of the earliest DTH players, you can find Tata Sky in relatively few homes in India. The obvious reason is the cost. While all the other DTH service providers (Are DTH Service Providers Tricking The Customers?) modified their pricing structure to the expectations of the Indian TV viewers, Tata Sky is yet to match the expectations of the Indian mass.

It tries to survive through expensive advertisements. It is yet to penetrate the market. As more number of DTH service providers come into the market it is only going to get difficult for Tata Sky to get the market share and to penetrate further. The new players will make their services more enticing and also cheaper to get hold of the market as they enter like what Sun Direct DTH did. Unless Tata Sky reduces its cost it will find the battle really tough. It is best to do it now rather than wait for the new players like Videocon come into the picture.

In terms of service and support Tata Sky offers reasonable services though it is not top notch. In 2008, it introduced recording facility to its services. With this new feature we can record up to 45 hours of video and watch it anytime. They hoped that this would offer them a breakthrough in the market. But again cost was one of the major constraining factors. This was primarily targeting the affluent and the elite. This group forms only a minor portion of the television viewers in India. The majority of TV fans in India belong to the middle class families so if any DTH service provider (BIG TV is THE WORST DTH SERVICE PROVIDER) is wants to capture the market, they will have to target the middle class families.

One of the hallmarks of Tata Sky is that it has many interactive services. Those who can afford the high price can indeed enjoy these active services. Some of the active services include the following – Actve Mall, Actve Wizkids, Actve Stories, Actve Learning, Actve Topper, Actve Games, Actve Darshan, Actve Sports, Actve Matrimony, Actve Cooking, Actve Astrology, Actve Star News etc. These interactive services try to cater to all age groups and people with varied taste. This gives really a nice touch to the packages of Tata Sky.

In terms of channel packages, Tata Sky needs little more flexibility. Little more thinking needs to be put into the forming of these packages. Interestingly, the Superbrand council has chosen Tata Sky as the Super Brand for 2009-2010. There are number of customers that complain about poor picture quality by Tata Sky. So before throwing in your money try to find a friend who already uses Tata Sky and proceed if he or she recommends it.

Tata sky is very costly, having costly packages (monthly and yearly).
Tata sky have less no of channels in all.
Less regional channels
less music channels (Lack of good music channels).
Most of the interactive services are paid.
No offers for new subscribers.

WOW! you have written a big post! The thing is, yes, it is true that Tata Sky is the pricier amongst the DTH services. However, it is the best in terms of service and quality. The only other DTH, which comes close is Airtel Digital Tv.

I came across an article which I shall post soon, in which they clearly stated that they will not reduce the cost but try to add more services. Let's see what happens. I was one of the "original" subscribers of Dish TV and have such a bad experience that I am not going anywhere near it and nor will I recommend it to anyone. Go got Tata Sky or ADTV.

I am fairly OK with DishTV - quality is acceptable even on 110" projection, quantity is quite appealing especially with recent channel additions.

My only complaint is that they have "effectively halved" the content of the child connection (for multiple TVs).

Maybe they were bad a couple of years ago - not any more.

That said, TS is slightly better in quality. I really do not care for Active channels - I don't get time to watch regular channels.

Tata Sky:

Pros:

- Very Good Picture and Sound Quality.
- User Friendly Interface and Controls
- Very Good Scheduling of Programs. (You can see the Schedule of next 7 days for all channels.)

Cons:

- A bit Costly
- Rain Outages
- Servicing is very expensive after warranty period.

I am using Tata Sky from last one year and till date never faced any issues with signal or renewal pack.

Overall i can give 9/10 to Tata Sky.

My DTH dealer, deals with DishTV, TataSky and BigTV. He told me that BigTV is the worst of the lot. For instance, when you change channels, there is along delay.

I have not seen Airtel DTH (or any other) in action, but out the above three, TataSky has the best user interface, control, and quality. Unfortunately it is a tad expensive.

Some members have the habit of praising any product without being objective about what they say.

I use Dist TV and in this while changing the channels there will be delay for 3 sec

. It really frustrates when by mistake you go to other channel and then again come back ..
This is using direct channel change ie put channel number and change.

Now by just normal prog + / - feature its quick
The time it takes to start is very annoying it takes almost 1 to 1.5 min

i can boot my pc within that time

I have been using TataSky for almost 20 months. Till now, no issues faced.
I can give 9.5/10 for TataSky.

Regarding the cost factor, Its a bit costly. But quality things come @ higher price.

& some people here have complained that TataSky offers less number of channels. I really wonder that will we have time to watch all those channels, if all channels are provided by TataSky.

Currenlty Tatasky is providing some 100+ channels, out of which I watch hardly < 20 ~ 30 channels.

* BIG TV is using the MPEG-4 technology which provides more space to carry channels then MEPG2. At the moment BIG TV channels providing 186 TV channels and 10 radio channels. They also have plan to add more then 250 channels in next few months. The MPEG Compression will allow space for much more channels as compared to Dish TV and Tata Sky.

see star plus logo on top right and see, the logo is crisp and sharp, that same logo in dish and tata sky blurs a bit.

I can give you hundreds of sources on the internet where Tata sky is rated better than Big TV. I bet you have never used Tata sky yourself.

Although everyone may not like all the interactive channels, they are meant for specific age groups. During rains, it is comparatively better than dish tv.

Then came the big tv. They launched the product and as usual reliance company they are targetting everyone around. They came with mpeg 4 technology but its a compressiontechnology and has nothing to do with video and audio quality (which initially most of the people were under that impression). However, their packagesare comparatively cheaper but where big tv lacks is the customer service and has poor quality of STB.

Overall, amongst all the 3 service providers, i was more satisfied with Tata Sky. As i said Tata Sky has positioned themselves as premium service provider whereas dish tv and big tv are more popular in masses. Its upto you, how you perceive things ad which products & services you want to buy. But by sheer comparison numbers, Tata Sky scores above Big Tv and Dish Tv.

I have not tried BigTV but my dealer told me to stay away from BigTV and he deals with all the three mentioned here (Dish/TS/Big). He is a very old friend and he would not advise me something incorrect.

As far as content goes, at the moment, DishTV shows more channels than any other provider.
