I think everyone gets that, I used to get this number showing when I had cable, and even get it on Tata Sky, it is annoying but its something you get used to!

    --------------

I too found out that its for privacy, its so there are no illegal signals going out, something like that!

What illegal signals? How does that number superimposed on my screen protect my privacy?

If there is some handshaking is supposed to go on, why does it have jitter my screen? I have never seen such things with BSkyB (UK).

p/s. And this is a complaint against all Indian DTH providers.

@Just4kix: Tune into channel 100 (ofc the spam and ad channel ) today i saw a interview with tatasky ceo by gul. She asked many questions to tatasky ceo and one of the question was the above problem. His reply was something like this, (its not exactly as i say)

First of all i would like to confess that i too dont like this thing, but all the dth providers in India have to use this, its a fingerprinting system which actually to protect piracy not privacy lol. It is to prevent illegal illegal broadcast of channels.

And further said by gul or ceo that we will/should support this thing its better to prevent piracy.

And what else was in that interview?: Self appreciation (tatasky) LOL

This is completely false. Or I am not getting the whole thing.

    1. Signals to the dish antenna are encrypted.
    2. If someone tries to rebroadcast/copy after STB decryption, the DTH logo will be seen.

So where is piracy coming into picture? And yet, if someone wants to do it, how does that annoying screen flash help?

Anyway, I suppose that this is something we cannot answer. The questions were rhetorical.

Yeah i agree, that statement is false but tatasky ceo said that they must put that (all dth providers) atleast in India.

I too don't understand how the crap mechanism works? They say it tracks illegal copiers but how they broadcaster will find.......

And yes the dth logo is enough to check if its legal or not. Anyone here knows how finger printing works??

Is the number on each screen unique? That might explain. If someone re-transmits it, there probably is a way to trap it. I may never know.

Yes the number is unique to each stb, the positon and the times at which the numbers appear are random so no one can tamper with it or try to hide the number. If anyone tries to re-transmit or show the feed on cable, tata sky will come to know which stb(and hence which subscriber) is doing it.

You will notice the numbers appear more frequently at the time of live telecasts (like at time of cricket/football matches).
