Default Quit Dishtv and buy Tata Sky ?

I am getting my 4 year old Dish TV connection terminated on Jan 1 (platinum plan will expire) to get Tata Sky. Checked the new plans of Tata Sky and I think it will suffice my needs like Lumière Movies, UTV World Movies, Fox Crime, FX, and freaking new channels which are not available with Dish TV.

I wish they will too provide good services like Dish TV as I never made a single call between a span period of 4 years for issues.

What you guys suggest ? Should I quit Dishtv and go for Tata Sky ? Hows the services. Please help me out

Dish TV has just taken additional TP and will be adding huge number of channels. They are already testing the transponders. Their HD package also may be good. Why go in for TataSky at this stage?

But the Dishtv Interface is very boring. Seen demo of Tata sky and Videocon D2h. Both are pretty awesome. Still not able to decide which one to go for.

I too have DishTV since 2005. I always pay annually and often thought of switching to TS when the renewal comes up.

But after careful analysis of quality of transmission, user interface, channel switch delay, etc. (in all of which TS ranks superior), I put the cost, the amount of TV we watch at home in the debit column (not to mention the initial setup cost). I too have rarely called DishTV for support; maybe three/four times in the last 4 years.

TS is 1.5 times more costly and in the end, I do not feel justified in switching.

    But to each his own.

Very nice explanations, I did saw your blog regarding DTH too but how do you call it costly ? I am paying 325pm for platinum plus bindass for 35rs and neo for 40 rs (no free bonus schemes for year renewals or half early this time). Total, it comes to 400rs pm. I think cost will be the same for Tata sky when calculating the addons.

Still, my main purpose to shift to another provide because of the old UI with dishtv which is lame as compared to others even the low cost d2h UI is good.

BTW: I renew my connection for 1month only till I decide which one to go for. Your upcoming suggestions are always welcome.

    Thanks.

I say costly because, I am paying Rs. 3550/- for the annual Titanium pack that is essentialy Platinum + UTV bouquet. I am not sure about Bindaas, but I think I get one Bindaas channel. I am not subscribed to Neo.

Comparatively, TataSky costs nearly Rs. 5000+. I don't have the exact calculations just now, but I did that when I was about to renew DishTV last time.

And you are correct. The DishTV UI is the most pathetic of all DTH providers.

    Ultimately, my guidance is:

    1. Decide and calculate how much TV you watch at home. You can be the only judge. I, for one, watch it hardly, except for weekends (probably about 10 hours per week).
    2. How much TV is watched by family members.
    3. Does the UI really bother them?
    4. Are there any channels that are exclusive to TS that you wish to have? And also the reverse.
    5. What is it that you are paying now and how much you will pay after the change.
    6. If the amount is more, does it justify?
    etc.

In my case the answer to (6) was a big NO and therefore ...

    1. I watch English movies and utv world movies and firangi would be a nice addon with tata sky.
    2. 7-11pm when they reach home from office.
    3. yes it does
    4. yes, but reverse are some zee premier channels which are 3 in total.
    5. same 1year plat package which you mentioned above plus neo sports for 480rs which comes to 4000+rs plus 30rs for movie non stop= 3600+480+360rs i.e. 4400rs. I don't care about 500-1000rs difference if I'm getting better channels as mentioned on the first post, then better UI but I'm not sure about the customer care.

Here is the comparison for the total pack:

    TataSky
    Grand Pack......Rs. 350/pm......Rs. 4200.00
    Sports Bonanza Pack.............Rs. 1705.00
    -------------------------------------------
    Total...........................Rs. 5905.00
    -------------------------------------------

    Dish TV
    Titanium Pack (Platinum+UTV)....Rs. 3550.00
    Neo Pack........Rs. 40/pm.......Rs. 480.00
    -------------------------------------------
    Total...........................Rs. 4030.00

Here is the comparison for the total pack (Annually)

    TataSky
    Grand Pack..........................Rs 3,850 PA
    Sports Bonanza Pack.............Rs. 1705.00
    -------------------------------------------
    Total...........................Rs. 5555.00
    -------------------------------------------

    OR

    Grand Pack..........................Rs 3,850 PA
    India Cricket Pack.............Rs. 325.00
    -------------------------------------------
    Total...........................Rs. 4175
    -------------------------------------------

    Dish TV
    Titanium Pack (Platinum+UTV)....Rs. 3550.00
    Neo Pack........Rs. 40/pm.......Rs. 480.00
    -------------------------------------------
    Total...........................Rs. 4030.00
    -------------------------------------------

Now compare, if you want all Sports channels it gonna cost more. However, if you ONLY watch India cricket matches its same as Dishtv package (145rs difference) but you get better UI, more channels like UTV World movies, Firangi etc.

Now, you tell me is it worth to go for Tata Sky ?

Regarding "Grand Pack" at Rs. 3850/pa, please accept my mistake for quoting Rs. 4200/-.

    Regarding "India Cricket Pack":
    1. The terms state that this pack will show Neo Cricket as default and any other sports channel that features Indian cricket team.
    2. If there are no cricket matches, it will just show Neo Cricket.
    3. I cannot live with just Cricket. I like to watch Tennins, Football, Basketball, Golf and WWE apart from cricket.
    4. I would also like to watch cricket matches involving other countries.
    5. Hence this option is not for me.

Ok. Can you confirm if suppose I buy Tata Sky, and get some 2-3 months offer initially. Does the Dish TV box and other stuff have to be returned ? My purpose of asking this is, suppose I don't like the Tata Sky, can I go back to DishTV as NOW I'm getting confused after reading your valuable points.

In case you return the other service, the SET top box remains with you and the dish the company takes Off. whenever you change to another provider, you loose the money you have paid for the STB, and these STBs would get dumped in home, no one takes old ones

basically we need to understand that all the satellite TV providers are in here for a business and not for charity. mostly they have one sided agreements.

some compromise we need to make. design a package that suits you from the new provider who ever he is. later if the management of that firm closes some channels we loose.

    My experience:
I lost DD Saptagiri (a Telugu channel) from Tatasky. i was angry really, but we cant help. they restored back DD Tamil, but Telugu they never restored.

I was using Dish TV since June 2005 but in 2006 (Dec),I decided to discontinue my Dish TV connection and got a Tata Sky connection.

The first three years 2006-2008,I paid once in six months and I wasn't getting all the channels available on Tata Sky as it was expensive.I must have been paying around Rs 350 a month.
Then in 2009 I got a Second Multiroom connection, which was about Rs 125 a month.Around the same time when my subscription was due for renewal,I decided to go for the Annual Package (all the channels)and if new channels were launched they would be added onto my Annual Package. The Annual South Jumbo Package cost me Rs 5500 + Rs 1500 for the Second Multiroom, plus 10 Movies On Demand free.

I had no issues with Dish TV,it was working well, but now after using Tata Sky,the User Interface on Dish TV feels outdated.I think Dish TV should upgrade their Interface and make it more user friendly like Tata Sky.

One thing Dish TV's Packages are reasonably priced compared to Tata Sky's.

At the end of the day you might get some channels on Tata Sky which you don't get on Dish TV.

All the DTH operators provide most of the channels which most people watch,so I don't think it is worth switching to Tata Sky just for a few channels which Dish TV doesn't provide.

I paid Rs 7500 for the Dish TV set top box and dish in 2005 and I gave it away to my DTH dealer it in 2006.He is still using it,since then.

Only now I realize that I have wasted that money.

So think twice before you change.

Default check out the new packages.......

tata sky is no longer the most expensive DtH....
recently last week there was a 300 cashback offer on recharge of 1000 bucks...

secondly they hav introduced two new packages,...
    supreme sports 240 p.m.
    grand sports 380 p.m.

grand sports package has all the channels except ten sports and ten cricket which are priced at 20 and 30 bucks respectively.....

so in sum total it desnt prove costly at all.

also ther's a mega lite pack 0f 5500 bucks which includes all the channels for 1 year pus 12 show case movies..

Fine if you belive so. But cashbacks as such are part time promotions and do not last for ever.

Just a simple sports pack for Rs. 380/pm and that too that does not have Ten Sports/Action is in my mind very expensive. Cable TV with all channels is prced less than that.

I just recharged my two Dish TV connections.

    - For Rs. 3550/- my parent connection was charged for 13 months with the Titanium Package
    - For Rs. 1920/- my child connection was charged for 13 months with the Diamond Package (Platinum pack minus UTV action, UTV movies)

The total is Rs. 5470 for two connections which is less than Rs. 5500 that TataSky charges for a single all-channel megapack.

The channels that I don't get and really don't care are:

    - Neo Sports/Neo Cricket
    - Discovery Turbo and Dicovery Science

The channels that I don't get and but I wish I had are:

    - Zee Khana Khajana (available for Rs. 20 pm extra)

    Thumbs up my package

Assuming u dont watch cartoons... (and also ignoring the annual aspect)

    Supreme Sports (includes Neo) 240
    English News/Ent/Movies 100
    Ten Sports 20

    Total is 360 p.m.
    Also 150 p.m. for 2nd TV

    Not included : Ten Cricket=30, Kids pack=45

Then again Dish TV is cheaper in all aspects...but with Tata sky its the quality of viewing, customer service, and most importantly the repair charges are just Rs.125!!

I would advice you not to come over to the TS. Stay where you are! Just wait a while and i'll be on DishTV as well. But i am attracted towards Videocon D2H and am debating about it.

Well I am with Videocon D2H for over a month now... And i must say that i am impressed. The set-top box is cool with lots of cool features and the highest channel package available till date.

Only thing left to be seen is the monsoon performance... The monsoon is around 2 months away. I have my fingers crossed!

I have heard good things about Videocon D2H. Their mosaic channel selection interface (see many channels on one screen - select one to view) is very good indeed.

Well there was a heavy rain here in Pune two days ago. And the connection was off for about 15 mins. I just hope that during the monsoons it does not stretch for hours! Like when we had TataSky... the connection was quite stable even in heavy rains. And even if there was no signal it was never more than 15 mins to 30 mins.

For VD2H... You have radio... then there three channels airing movies all day long. Although they are not all blockbuster hits. But who would give you free movie channels. And lots of other cool little features that you would discover when you get the connection.

And there's a channel called NGC Music. I don't who else provides this! But its English and plays only music not like the lame MTV, Channel V crap we see all day.

Finally, I made my decision and moved to Airtel DTH.

    Major reasons :

    1. The software and UI was laggy as always. The loading time is not at par as comparable to other DTH specially Airtel.

    2. Dish tv released a new software which is not available for old customers like me.

    3. They want me to pay 350bucks plus tax to swap the DTH, 150bucks plus tax for the agent who will come to my place for box swap. Why would I give them my working old STB lol crazy **** policies.

    4. They increased the platinum package to 350rs and the 1 year package will change as per the new terms.

    5. They removed the ten sports in platinum package and added it as a a la carte package.

    6. The worst and pathetic customer service, though in India we don't have terms like cc but they are more than that.

    7. I was pissed off with Dishtv.

I don't mind paying few extra bucks to Airtel DTH when I get no bootups, lags, ui sucks etc.

I hope all goes well here with Airtel DTH now.

My personal suggestion to all the new DTH users, please save yourself some time and don't buy dishtv. After using dishtv from 5years, I must say what I was missing while not using other DTH services.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

When I upgrade next, it will be for TataSky HD and I am thinking as follows:

    Supreme Sports .......................... Rs. 240/pm
    English News ............................ Rs. 20/pm
    English Entertainment ................... Rs. 35/pm
    HD Gold ................................. Rs. 50/pm
    -----------------------------------------------------
    Total ................................... Rs. 345/pm

I am glad you are also going to change

Dish TV HD package cost: Base package (Platinum) + HD package= 350+100rs or even higher now.

I will change when I buy HD-TV. For CRT, I do not think TS or DishTV matters really.

Besides the correct name for DishTV TruHD should be DishTV FakeHD

I have the exact same package, except the English news, I am subscribed to the music (crap)pack. I am soon going to unsubscribe it.
Extra I have English movies. If they launch even 1 more HD movie channel I will unsubscribe the English Movie pack too, watching 4:3 telecast stretched on a 16:9 TV is No fun.

The low cost of HD pack makes this combo a tru Value for money.

When I made up the above TS combo, I thought hard about the Eng movies pack. I thought that since mt lib contains all the blockbusters, I really don't need the pack.
