DTH transmissions are in KU band which is affected by rain and cloudy weather.. so every DTH be it tata or big or dish, will face some problems during heavy showers.. however, it get restored in a while.. and tata sky quality level is so far the best compared to others.

    Smile TataSKY vs Dishtv

Take 2 tv together and make connection one with tatasky and other with dishtv. See the channel star one in dishtv. It seems like someone through water drops in the tv screen. But in tatasky picture is dobly digitel.
Many interactive service is there in tatasky. From tatasky you can make shopping, downloading to your mobile. Dishtv does not have these features. Just giving advertisement nothing goes popular but by giving good serivce a little one can be goes popular.
    So tatasky rocks over dishtv.

Tata Sky does have good clarity in picture dolby digital quality due to which watching latest movies is so much fun from the comfort of home with the entire family. Also the latest additions in interactive services are very innovative and fruitful. The CC is one of the best in comparison with others.

There is no doubt that Tata sky is best among the DTH. I agree that many people do have an issue with pricing. But Dish Tv et al simply cannot compare with the services provided by Tata Sky. A comparison of testimonials of people who have used Tata Sky vs those who have used Big Tv, Dish Tv etc.... will simply prove that. Plus, Tata Sky is also adding new channels and planning to add actve services. So it will only improve with time.

    here is my experience..

    1)

When i called up tatasky for enquires i was satisfied. The phone numbers were correctly mentioned in ads. I got the information i wanted at first shot. I got to know the nearest dealer and address with Phone numbers.

    but

in dist tv, i got the number from my friend who has dish tv at his house. when i tried the numbers given, it never used to connected. couples of times it got connected and the fellow at the other side said its not dish tv!! I tried other numbers given in ads. It took me almost a week to get to talk to a dish tv fellow. Most of the Phone numbers are wrong..

    2)

I decided to buy tata sky.. I went to dealer at night 8.30. I paid the amount and the system was registered with my contact details. As soon i came out the shop i got a call from tata sky ppl asking me when they should send technicians to my house for setting up the antenna. This was very fast. They came the next day at sharp 11 Am as booked..

    ...

I have all channels tht i want watch in tata sky so its not a problem..
seems to me tht u r sum tata-sky promote or saleman...i had bought tatasky a year bak....and i found the service pretty much crap....the helpline is almost always busy...THE ENGINEERS INSTALLED THE THING 4 DAYS AFTER I PURCHASED THE PRODUCT...very disapointing.....i switched to videocon-d2h soon after, and havnt faced a problem since then....it is also much cheaper!

Sorry guys.. I had a completely different experience here..Tata Sky is a nightmare.. I stay in pune and daily face a lot of problems. Major problem is Customer Care Service doesnt care about customers. Initially they did provide a very good service but after 2 weeks they are not responding. {My telephone bill increased by Rs300 which is more than my monthly Tata Sky DTH plan} Lol.. I am having a lot of problem with my STB. It restarts automatically every 10 to 15 minutes. Sound control doesnt work... and it also has a major signal receiving problem. Tata Sky is not as clear as Airtel or Videocon D2H. They offer MPG4 whereas Tata Sky doesnt. Many friends of mine had Tata Sky at their places that's why I also subscribed for the same. But my friends are also facing a lot of problems and switching to Videocon or Airtel. When Tata sky was launched they were distributing better STBs but now every STB has the same problems.

I will recommend Tata Sky only if you have a lot of "Black" money and a lot of time and patience to track customer service guys. Also, if you have kids who watch TV all the time, get Tata Sky.. they will lose their patience very soon and start studying..

    Hi,

I live in Mysore and I got tata sky DTH in June 2008.IN about one year and 9 months I feel that this service is technically sound with good picture clarity and locally available cust care.rThere is no need to ring up Cust care no.Further there is total transparency in dealing with customers. The other DTH providers are just fooling public with some technical jargon like MPEG 4 picture DVSB etc.I hv compared Tata Sky Airtel SUN direct etc.the pic quality is the same.I wonder what is wrong with tata Sky in Pune?

There is nothing wrong with TS in Pune.

But sometimes some people do not get the expected level of service which they hear others are getting. Their concerns are genuine to an extent.

I personally feel that TS customer service is fairly good but members here also have a valid complaint.

LOL. I saw this post a long time ago. When I read this post I almost fell out of my seat laughing. Reading this post still brings smile to me and I often read this post whenever I am bored or stressed.

People make any kind of comment without understanding.

    1. First of all, Dolby Digital (or DTS) refers to sound and not picture. There is no such thing as DD picture.
    2. Dolby or DTS require extra decoding. STBs or TVs do not have a Dolby Digital decoder.

Now let us talk about the picture quality (PQ). Now, I definitely agree that TS has better PQ than many DTH providers but it is still nowehere near to DVD. I explained this in another post and will explain it here again:

    1. A DVD movie (2 hours) is stored on a dual layer DVD and is usually the typical size is 7 GB. This means a bandwidth requirement of 3.5 GB per hour.
    2. Even a crappy DVix/XVid movie (2 hours), downloaded from torrent is 700 to 800 MB. This means a bandwidth requirement of 350~400 MB per hour.
    3. DTH providers are broadcasting at 100~150 MB per hour.

You do the PQ comparison yourself.

And I will refrain for commenting on MPEG4 anymore. Just do a forum search:

    Search --> Advanced Search
    Keywords: MPEG4 MPEG2
    Author: just4kix

    So in a nutshell:

    a) TS PQ better than most: Yes
    b) TS PQ = DVD Quality: Take a hike, my friend.

Soon Tata Sky is going to be out with HDTV and my knowledge not being quite sound on the technical aspect could you provide insight whether HDTV implies picture calrity alongwith 5.1 dolby sound quality? If this situation is fulfilled will HD viewing be equal or greater than DVD quality?

    1. HD will definitely be better than DVD. DVD is SD quality.
    2. Normal TV transmission (even in HD) will not be Dolby Digital 5.1 - it will be stereo. Dolby Digital is audio encoding technology and must be licensed from Dolby.
    3. Some movies that are encoded in DD can be shown in DD 5.1 but the STB must have DD decoder inside.
    4. To enjoy HD quality, you must have an HD TV. On normal CRT TV, HD will not make an iota of difference.
    5. To enjoy 5.1 channel surround sound (if provided), the STB must have either an optical/coaxial digital out or six (5+1) separate discrete pre-amp out channels. You can connect these to an AVR to get HT sound (via attached 5.1 speakers)
    6. Maximum HD resolution expected is 1080i and not 1080p.
    7. Do not expect 7.1 or more channels.

Since HD too have levels of resolution 1080i and 1080p there will be competition from Co.s end but customers being unaware (as in the case of MPEG2/MPEG4) will find it difficult to find out the difference and if all dth provide same levels there may be a scope of eliminating competition How would one DTh have differential advantage over the other lies a question in that case.

1080p is possible via HDMI only. So unless the STB provides HDMI-out, 1080p is out.

The rest of the argument, viz., PQ depends upon the compression used. It is here that MPEG4 wins over MPEG2. MPEG4 is a more efficient way of compression.

As we know, higher compression = loss of details = deterioration of quality.

But because MPEG4 can compress better, it will not sacrifice quality for size. An MPEG4 stream may be compressed quite a lot and it may be smaller in size than the MPEG2 stream and yet it may be better than MPEG2 stream.

So using the same or less bandwidth, the MPEG4 technology will be able to squeeze more quality. This only works in favour of the DTH provider. To the consumer it does not matter.

(p/s. note the loaded words like "can", "may", etc.)

But some DTH providers may compress more (even with MPEG4) than others (to save even further on bandwidth). And here the compression equation will come back into reckoning.

At the moment, we say that xxx has better PQ than yyy. This is because xxx may be using MPEG4 (or even MPEG2) but not compressing too much to provide good PQ.

Finally, it also depends upon the source. If the source is bad, nothing can be done. In this context the equation is:

    crap in = crap out.

Aren't all the dth providers providing MPEG4? Tata Sky's latest black box is MPEG 4 enabled, Airtel, Sundirect, Reliance Big tv, D2h are MPEG4 only I am unsure about Dish tv.
(P.S - correct if any misappropriation in the above)

If above conditions are appropriate again all dth stand at par considering all dth provide MPEG4.

DishTV is on MPEG2. TataSky's new STBs (black model) and the TS+ STB are MPEg4 enabled but TS is still on MPEG2.

    All others are on MPEG4.

Once again: to the common user MPEG2 or MPEG4 cannot bring additional clarity. This is a complete myth spread by many.

Note the extremely clever Airtel Digital ad. The ad says that they provide better clarity and it also says that they use MPEG4 technology. The ad never says they provide better clarity because they use MPEG4. People are putting 2 and 2 together to make 4.

Now we can just wait and see which Co. adopts which strategy to launch HDTV.

Very much true, those technology is only useful for the dth provider for us it doesn't matter.

+1, most of the latest dth providers in their ad emphasize the word MPEG4 technology, but guys since now you all know what is the truth next time ur friend or anybody says i have a mpeg4 tech based dth proudly give him/her a nice lecture

Your Right, after 1 yr u are on ur own, besides that Tata sky has the highest subscription price for the least no. of channels. I am a victim of Tata sky.

Their A'la carte bouquet is the most useless one, Once you become a Tata SKY subscriber you are almost trapped in their stupid packages.

I have 2 Tata sky set top box which i would like to sell and move to some other decent DTH provider who is not hell bent on looting me.

while the negative aspects are still to be debated, TataSky people attend service calls on payment-- for example, in my case i had to pay Rs 350 or so (adjusted thro' my subscription amounts) and they replaced the LNA. Perhaps it is not fair expecting a service provider to freely service our equipment after one year5,

please read thro the conditions that we have signed for. we cant now talk different from what we signed under agreement.

Sorry for inconvinience in my above post...

Hey why you compare dishtv with tatasky.

It is very sameful to compare such a service which have not at all any interactive services like active english, learning, wizkids, shopping, downloading, rewards, etc which are included in tatasky.

Dishtv signal quality is less than tatasky,

Tatasky have DVD quality picture with Dobly Digitel sound.

Dish tv have more channel than tatasky but dishtv have many unnecessary channels like russian channels which are no needed for our peoples...

Dishtv set top box is very slow comparing to tatasky, in dishtv when u change to the next channel the below banner shows next channel imformation with sound but the picture of prev channel is hangg out... Its so slow.

Tatasky sends signals from INSAT-4A which is regarded as best satellite for sound and picture. So its signal strength and signal quality is best of all.

Dishtv as a zee network company definately can show their own channels like zee tv, cinema, (only Indian ch) for free, but they didn't.

Tatasky is the only DTH to produce H.D. CHANNELS in India like Star Plus HD (104), nat geo, discovery, neo, dd.,... etc
