The DishTV portability is in theory only. Now let us consider that you are a DishTV subscriber right now and you wish to switch to some other provider.

The other provider is going to force you to buy its CPE (dish+lnb+stb).

So in practical terms there is no portability. We must note that the DTH providers do not wish portability. This helps them to lock the customer. After all, who will pay Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2500 everytime to change the provider? (although people spend much, much more every year or two when they change mobile handsets).

In some other thread/post, I had remarked that abroad when you subscribe for cable/DTH, the CPE is free but there is a minimum one year contract period. I wish that this trend starts in India.
