Thread: Toslink cable...

I have a tatasky HD+ box, a 46inch Philips HD LCD tv and a Philips home theater system. There is a fiber optic connectivity on the HT however i am not sure if it is there on the TV and the HD box. If it is there on the HD box can i use a toslink cable for better sound via my HT?

Optical out contains sound only.

Most certainly the TV will not have it. Check whether the HD STB has an optical out. If there is, you can connect the output from HD STB to your Philips system via Optical cable. It will provide 5.1 sound when and where available.

However, optical connections is old technology and is on the way out. The new generation uses HDMI which contains Video + Audio. HDMI has higher bandwidth capability and supports 7.1 channel sound. Use HDMI when available. Does your Philips HT have HDMI-in?

Hey thanks for the response. OK if i opt out of the optical cable and take the HDMI instead then i may have to use a converter as my HT does not have HDMI.

Will a converter form optical to HDMI work it it exists?

I do not think that there is an optical to HDMI converter. But I could be mistaken.

If there is a coaxial digital-out (orange RCA terminal) from HD-STB and coaxial digital-in at the HT, you could use it. Coaxial digital carries 5.1 surround sound.
