Default Tata sky giving free replacement of MPEG 4 set top box!

    Hi,

I am a Tata Sky DTH subscriber since 2007.Just three days back Tata sky messaged me that they are replacing my MPEG2 STB with a new MPEG4 STB(made by broadcom corpn)free of cost and wanted my consent.I agreed and promptly yesterday 29th the local dealer at Mysore came and replaced the old STB with a new slick and slim one free of cost. But he didnt give its remote because the old remote works with the new STB.I found that the new STB has a USB port at the back. Can anyone who has a similar STB enlighten me how to use that USB port?Further it seems the remote of the new STB is universal and can control the TV too.He declined to give me the new remote saying his instructions are to replace the STB ONLY.But I find the sound and picture quality is much better with the new MPEG4 STB.Has Tata Sky scored an advantage over the competitors by this move?

I just want to know how the USB port can be used?thanks in advance!

Most other DTH operators are already using MPEG 4 set top boxes. I just checked my box and there is a USB slot at the back. I replied to your post in another thread saying it may be HDMI but it is indeed USB so I called up Tata sky and they say it is of no use right now and is there for future use when they may enable new features like USB recording for instance. At the moment you cant use it for anything apart from may be charging your mobile phone?

You should call Tata Sky and ask them to also give you the new remote to the new STB box. Every set topbox has a new remote and customers always get a remote with the box.

You should have called Tata Sky customer service team while the engineer was atyour place.

    Hi,

I contacted them and was given the reply that only the STB is being replaced and the old remote works with it.they also told that the MPEG4 STB were procured without remote for this specific replacement purpose!Very smart indeed!

Is the box the same as the old one, as in looks wise?

If it is then it justifies them saying that the old remote will work, but if it looks totally different then it means they are just trying to save money.

Hi Preeti!maybe Tatas acted smart to save money but we didnt expect this free replacement from them in the first place! The carton was opened in my presence !only the STB was inside! No remote and no power adaptor!I checked the specs! it is the same 12v and 1.5A-18watts!But you see they replace only after you accept it in writing through SMS or online! That is yet another smart move by them!

Hi! The new STB is black slick and smaller in size with only two LEDs in front unlike the old one which had power and channel buttons on the front panel! the smart card is inserted from the back!half the card is outside!it has a USB port too at the rear which they say is for future use when USB recording is introduced! But the adavantage is there is a visible improvement in picture clarity and sound quality! The banner display has also changed with more details!

So it is a different box! Pure showcase of not giving customers new accessories with the STB and saving money. If customer had to purchase the new MPEG4 box then they would have provided the remote with it.

Even my neighbors got an upgrade and didn't get given a new remote. They also thought they would get a new remote, but were denied it by the engineer.

Old remote controls work on the new STB's, so thats why Tata Sky have not provided a new remote, and because they are providing the replacement for free they have saved the cost of remotes.
