    Default Tikona-nanostation

I applied for Tikona last week and paid 500rs as installation charges.
Since their AP was installed next building to mine, i was getting weak signal,
so that they need to install one more device called nanostation near my window.
The 2 guys came for installation were asking another 500rs for the device. When i asked why 500rs again, they say its device cost. I told them 2 come 2morrow.

Has anyone using nano device? how is it? Is that cost 500 bucks?

The nanosation is probably gonna be used as the CPE, like the way you use a modem to connect to your landline broadband. This will be the link between your computer and the AP

Computer ------ NanoStation ---------- AP --------- ISP Gateway

Wireless signals from an AP tends to be weak directly below where the antenna/AP is mounted. This is because of something called the beamwidth of the antenna.

This does not mean that you can only get signals within the width of the beam, but just that it's significantly weaker outside of the beam which is probably why the NannoStation is needed. Technically there can be many other reasons - LOS, fresnel zone, refraction and reflection, noise and interference to mention a few. But I'm not saying this is the reason your provider is giving you the CPE - just a possibility. Maybe that's the way the provider's setup is. For example I do see 'good' signals for Tikona on my wireless laptop which keeps going on and off but yes, a nanostation with its more powerful radio than my laptop's, and mounted on the roof would definitely make for better and stable signals.

And the nanostation sure does cost a LOT more than 500 bucks.

When ever a company rep or maintainence guy asks for extra money make it a point to call customer support and ask them if there is really extra charge or not. It is common practice to extract extra money and pocket it.
