I had requested for a Demo for Tikona’s WiBro service. The Demo apparetly failed to work due to lack of signal strength. So, I was suggested use of Ubiquiti’s ‘NANOStation2 loco’. It’s a piece of hardware that is installed on rooftop. Similar to Tata WiMax but only smaller and light-weight. It is connected with Ethernet CAT5 with POE function (Power Over Ethernet) as most Service Providers use these days.
WiBro is new to my place(Bangalore - Marthahalli). They have recently established their network at other places in Bangalore too. They focus on sales and would tell you exactly what need to hear to meet their Daily Targets. Their sales methods are horrible and they know it.
I had applied for Tikona WiBro Service on 05th April 2010. Provided my ID Proof, Address Proof, Passport Standard size photograph and a Demand Draft Rs.500 towards Tikona Digital Networks. The sales person promised me that the connection will be install the very next day. I called him next day, he wouldn’t answer and has the same attitude till date.
Once your application is processed the needed hardware is summoned from Mumbai or Chennai. Now not all sales representative would submit your applications the same day. They would submit a few and few the next day. This way they show an average sales per day (I know this cuz I’ve done this). You will get a SMS with Tikona login credentials and to use it within 15 days. It would take couple days after that to get your devices to the local Tikona Office. I got my login details the next day on 06th April 2010. (I felt so good to know that I was not a victim of fraud).
I was not answered or reach until 10th April 2010. This was the day I was pissed. I approached one of their office in Domlur. Spoke to one of their Area manager. He inspected my proof of purchase and sent out a technician immediately to install the NANOStation. The techie checked for Signal Strength in my location. Apparently It was weak. It was late and he said that he would need clear sunlight to set the NANO station in Line-Of-Sight with the closest Tower (AP).
So next day, at noon (with access to the richest sunlight and clear line-of-sight) he installed the device on roof top. The device was able to achieve 2 signals out of 4. My requested package was FUL799 (600kbps). As per their promises, I was a bait for 2mbps speed for the first 500MB data transfer(Download and Upload). After which I would be switched to my actual connection speed i.e; 600kbps DOWN and 256kbps UP. The Techguy used his demo account to check for connection stability. As it turns out, the connection was good enough.
I’m using Windows 7 on my desktop. They would first Install Tikona WiBro Dialer on the system. Then a sytem reboot. I logged with my login details. Changed my password on first login. The Techie opened the Site: Speedtest.tikona.in to very the connection speed for my account. Now I wish I could post the details for that speedtest but I’m afraid I forgot to save it. As I recall the connection speed was 1.5mbps with download tranfer rate 195kbytes/sec. There after the connection speed suddenly switched to my basic plan. The Speed Tests are as following;
Day;

The WiBro dialer worked for 3-4days on Win7. Now When I try to login using the dialer I get an error Unable to connect or Authorization error. So I now connect to internet by accessing site: Login.Tikona.in. This site would also let you check your session summary, download WiBro dialer, change your password, etc...
Although the connection speed and rates are eye-candy, there are a few demerits to this connection. One of which is that you cannot connect multiple system to internet at the same time. Your login will be used by one system at one time. So far its either One or the other.
For torrent users, the port forwarding functionality is currently disabled by default. Despite the download transfer rates is 40-70kbytes/sec.
There is still more to explore... Tikona hasn't been an easy connection for alot of users. But thats their story.
Chandrakant...
