    Default Train Journey

Please discuss your likes and dislikes about traveling by train.

    ----

Personally train my favorite mode of transport. I generally like it because , it gives a break from the noise present in road travel. The freedom to be able to move around during long journeys is another motivating factor.

Apart from food and toilet, enjoy travel by train. The main advantage is we can sleep properly when compared to bus. I hate travel in general compartment. In that case I choose bus if I can manage to get a seat.

I don't like traveling by train. In my whole life it was only once Delhi to Guwahati and I hated each moment. The journey never ends and lotsa people around you. I prefer flights or travelling on my own car as I have the liberty to stop where i want to, go as I want and be what I want without caring about a whole damn bunch of unknown faces around me.

Maybe you can try first class. I think those travelling in AC classes are well behaved, if thats what you are worried about.

OK so this is how my recent journey from Ahmedabad to Trivendrum panned out.

I caught the train from A'bad at 11:35 am. Found my seat in the coach B3. It was a regular AC 3 tier birth. The train runs from Bikaner in Rajasthan to Trivendrum in Kerala. Total run time is ~60 hours.

It takes ~44 hours from A'bad to Trivendrum. So the train left the station on time, I arranged my luggage and everything. Than out of curiosity i was asking people sitting around me their berth numbers. i generally prefer the upper birth during long journeys and was looking if any one was interested in exchanging their seats with me, since I had gotten the lower berth seats. I have seen that elderly people generally prefer lower seats. I was talking to this marwari gentelman and we found out that we both had the same berth number. For a moment I thought I will be ****ed. This journey will be a nightmare. But that person was cool, he said let the TC come and settle this issue.

After about half an hour the TC did arrive, so we both showed him our tickets...When he looked at my name...he quickly said "Sir your ticket has been upgraded"...I was like what the fish...thats good?

He than told me that I will be moving to AC 2 tier coach no. A1. I had never travelled in an AC2 tier coach before....

    More on this later...

Ever since the upgradation facility has come into picture, it has created a lot of confusion followed by sheer happiness.

Well usually the people who harass, are those go for a free ride, ya they board reserved coaches too.

You don't have this problem in first class or AC compartments.

other than that ofcourse the affordablity factor comes. Mind i said they are only well behaved not that they are all gentlemen.

In my experience, i've never seen anybody rude in AC compartments (not that those in general are so).

The upgradation system can cause happiness as well as hassles, depending on how you see it.

if you are booking manually, upgradation is done only if the relevant box is ticked.
if booking through IRCTC, this box is checked by default and needs to be unchecked manually.

the best form of rail travel in this country is travelling is a AC 1st class Rajdhani berth. you would really feel that you are treated like royalty. you can order any food, the attendant makes your bed, you got a proper bathroom with hot water facility and the berths are much wider.

That same experience is also available in many older trains. I have seen one of those coaches from Inside. Its definitely 3*** or 4**** experience. I saw this kind of a coach in Gujarat Mail [a'bad to mumbai]. Never had a chance to travel in one of those.

He then told me that I will be moving to AC 2 tier coach no. A1. I had never travelled in an AC2 tier coach before....
Ok to continue where I left off.

So I gathered all my luggage brimming with excitement...went to my new berth. Surprisingly it was a lower berth seat. As you may know there are only 4 seats/berths in AC2 tier as compared to 6 in AC3 tier. On two upper berth seats were a newlywed couple travelling on their honeymoon to Kerala from A’bad. The other lower seat was unoccupied because the person travelling on that seat was going to board from Vasai road station, (Outside Mumbai). That was still at least 10 hours away. So in a berth suited for 4 people, only 3 were present. That gave the entire lower berth area to me alone!!

This newlywed couple was well... much occupied talking to each other. Most of the time they would close their curtains...god knows what they were doing on the upper berth. It’s difficult to know in a moving train. . Anyway so lunch time arrived...I ordered the lunch. Generally I like south Indian food like Dosa, idli, upma and other such things. But man that food was yuck....It was pathetic! They were charging 35 bucks for the meal. I have had better meals for much less on road side stalls in A’bad.

One of the great disadvantages of AC coaches is that the IRCTC catering staff won’t allow any outside vendors to come inside. Baroda is well known for its cutlets and veg. sandwiches. I was hoping that I might be able to order it...but I think only outside vendor sell those things, and when you are travelling alone, you can’t leave your luggage un-attended. So I could not get those great snacks and was forced to eat the yucky food. I guess I got great seats but the worst possible food.

Ok time went on...I completed One of Robin Sharma's books during that time...and was brimming with positive energy.

The passenger who was supposed to board at vasai road, eventually did. He was also a business traveller just like me. The couple upstairs were still occupied with each other. So I started talking to this guy...and we had a very normal conversation. He told me that he was a toy manufacturer based in Mumbai and was going to his native place in Northern Kerala. Night came and we all slept...can’t say the same for the people who were on the berth above.

Next day came, I think now the couple were bored from their doing their business. They also started talking with other people. I think second day was the best one. In the morning at ~7:30 we passed the Sawantwadi station (Maharashtra Goa border)...than it was Goa! The best vistas the Western Ghats have to offer!! Since everyone was now friendly with each other and constantly talking the time flew by like anything. By the evening the gentleman seating opposite to me, got off. The name of the station escapes me atm. Only 12 hours journey was left.

We were supposed to arrive at Trivandrum at 7:30am. But how wonderful of the Indian Railway that we actually arrived 2 hours earlier than the scheduled time!

Phew that was a long post...

    ---The end---

I always like journey in train and also in sleeper and I always enjoy entire the journey. My father told me several time to journey in AC 2 tier(as he get pass from office) but I never like that now he never deny my choice.
    My first one
So once 1993 we are returning from Lucknow we are in Amritsar Mail and next day when train reach bengal that day bengal was 'bandh' (strike) and we spend 24 hour in train at one station. In the evening there is no water in toilet and no light in train also.We have tried very much to get car or anything(as that place only 200 Km away from kolkata, also no Hotel is also present near the station) but can't find anything at that place.
When it happen that time we feel it horrible but when it passed now it's a life experience.

Gujarat mail is the best train ever!! the timing, speed every thing is so perfect! Its unbelievable that IRCTC can run a train as good as like this one. even the pillows they provide are of the best quality.

I have been on Rajdhani A'bad to Delhi twice...loved it! the food, service, toilets every thing is great!

When I went to Goa...2 years ago, we took Gujarat mail till Dadar and from Dadar we took a train called Mandovi express. Gujarat mail reaches Dadar west at ~5:30 to 6:00am. Mandovi leaves Dadar at ~7:45 am. so the timing of two trains is very convinient if you are taking connecting trains.

Default My train journeys - Part I

I have been travelling on trains for quite some time. Air Travel affordability was a recent phenomenon and I have been travelling on trains since when, I cannot remember.

My earliest memory is when we were living in Bihar (near Lohardaga, currently in Jharkhand). To come to Maharashtra we had two options - via Gaya or via Chakradharpur.

Chakradharpur was a more convenient option for us. We used to take the Bombay-Howrah Express (via Nagpur) as it used to be convenient.

When we left Bihar for good, we took a Jeep ride to Gaya. I think the ride was about 6 hours. At Gaya, we saw the Bodhi tree and the Buddhist temples. The Calcutta Bombay Mail (via Allahabad) reached Gaya at 4 AM. We waited in the waiting room for an agonizing time. Boarded the train. When I woke in the morning, we were just pulling out of Mughal Sarai Jn. The only thing I remember of that station is the huge railway yard. I also remembering passing Allahabad and the great crossing of the Yamuna just before Naini Jn.

We left Bihar for good and for a time my mother, sister and I lived with my Naani in MH while my father was working in Rajasthan. We were to join him soon as soon as he got living quarters.

The journey in those days, I think, was not too bad. Trains were just as crowded but reserved compartments were meant for people having reserved tickets only. We could never afford to travel by I class. My father told me of a certain "Rajdhani Express" which travelled at great speed and had only Air Conditioned coaches. I asked my father, "What is Air Conditioned?".

When we were about to travel to Rajasthan (Sawai Madhopur), we were taking the Bombay-Ferozpur Janata Express. While waiting at the Bombay Central Station (we had arrived quite early from Nasik and since had no where to go, were waiting on the platform), I saw one of most beautiful trains that I had ever seen ... all its coaches were spank clean and had the same colour, a livery of orangish brown with yellow stripes, its windows were completely covered with dark glass; it was a train like I had never seen. My father told me, "That my dear, is the Rajdhani Express!"

I asked my father, why we did not travel by such a nice train. My father said, "Two reasons. One. It does not stop at our station. Two. Even if did, its one single ticket costs more than what I earn in the whole month." I said to myself, that one day I will travel by this train.

    ... End of part 1 ...

wow thats a lovely experience. would love to read the forthcoming parts

what about steam engines and the coal dust, lousy speed etc ???

    ---------

My most memorable experience was when i got to travel in electric engine when i was young.

Also i would not leave the station, untill i see the engine from nearby, each and everytime i went somewhere. And for some reason, i love electric engines more than diesel ones.

And my favorite timepass (esp during my trips to assam) was to go to n fro along the lenght of the train , never mind that pantry car was a motivation

when i went to my native, if time permitted , i got to see diesel engine as well, coz they are not so busy ....
