Default Online check in - Air travel Friend or Foe?

    Hi,

I'm not sure how many have tried the option of online check in for air travel. Most of the domestic airlines have this option provided the passenger just have a cabin luggage. Check in luggage is not allowed. This is the rule.

I have tried this option with both Indigo and Spice jet. I actually got the boarding pass online and I took the print out and proceeded to the check in counter, but to my amusement they really dont care of that e-boarding pass. At the security check they demand the tiny boarding pass received during check in luggage. Anyway my intention was the window seat, and with this I always had the window, but I had the cabin luggage only. Now m questions are -

    1. The advantage is seat selection, and mostly I carry cabin luggage. What if I take check in luggage as well?
Will they deny boarding just because I checked in online, and I have check in luggage?!

    2. The real advantage is the lesser time required, you dont have to stand in queue, but with the attitide of security staff demanding the "boarding pass" issued from the counter, is this really useful ?

How many have tried this? Faced any difficulty with check in luggage?

    Regards
    Nevin.

Online checking is not permitted when you have baggage to check-in. The reason is obvious - they have to tag your checked in baggage. I have tried online check-in at the kiosk inside the airport and it worked.

Check in kiosks at airport wont cause such a problem, I've done that with Emirates, but hardly have I seen it here in India. Do you think it will work with online check in? I'm gonna take a chance this time. If they wont let check in luggage, I will take it along with my cabin one!

Whats the point doing online checkin if you have baggage to checkin as you would have to que up to get your bags checked in any way. I have do.e checkin at kiosks and then checked in my baggage at the counter a few times but honestly there is no point going to one of those kiosks if you have baggage as it kills the very purpose of being able to get your boarding passes yourself.

The main intenion, as far as I'm concerned is seat selection (window seat). At least I dont have to deal with the attitude of the staff!!

Aisle and window seats get booked first. They are also reserved for frequent fliers with high miles. Hence one cannot be assured of such a seat when checking in at the counter (at the last moment). Nowadays, some airlines are also charging for such seats.

So you are right. One should do online checkin for seat/meal preferences.

Once you have the confirmation, you can visit the airline kiosk (if available) to get the boarding pass. This is what I normally do to avoid queues. But getting boarding pass this way is only possible when there is no baggage to check-in.

I have never faced issue with "attitude of staff". I have usually found them courteous and helpfull (including Air India). However, they will be very firm about excess baggage most of the time (98 out of 100).
