I have always wanted to go and see what North East is like but I hear a lot of bad things about the law and order situation there and its been like that for years.

I have spent hours and hours on Google Earth look at places and some of them look lovely atleast the satellite picures do and from what I hear the wether there is very pleasent as well.

Have you been to any of the North Eastern states? please share your views with all of us if you have and what places you recomend one shouldnt miss.

Here I can give u some help . I have some memorable events at North eastern states known as " Seven sisters" . Certainly law and order issues are there, but it will not stop u to travel, except through some states.

In North east u should never miss " Chirapunji" my trip to Chirapunji was a really memorable . Then Tawang, Bombdilla in Arunachal Pradesh , Shillong

Kaziranga National Park ( Assam) .

and admin if you go to Assam please dont forget to bring darjeeling tea and white jasmine

Road Transport : Good motorable raods connect Agartala with Silchar- 288 kms, Guwahati 599 kms, Shillong 499 kms, Dharmanagar- 200 kms. Tripura Road Transport Corporation buses connect Silchar, Shillong and Dharma Nagar to Agartala.

Agartala has a small but decent selection of hotels. The accommodation at Agartala are nothing very extravagant, but something for every traveler coming to Agartala, Tripura. Ujjayanta Palace
The major attraction of the town is the Ujjayanta Palace, which was established in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style in 1901 by Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya. It is a two-storeyed mansion, with 28 hectares of parkland, and now occupies the office of the State Legislative Assembly. In the grounds, there are two temples - Umanneshwar and Jagganath - both of which are ochre in colour.

Kunjaban Palace
Another major place of attraction is the Kunjaban Palace built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya. It is located at a distance of 1 km away from the Ujjayanta Palace on a hillock. The Palace is the official residence of the Governor of Tripura. The southern part of the Palace is open to the public and has been named as Rabindra Kanan.

Neermahal
Located about 55 km from Agartala is Neermahal, Tripura's major tourist destination. It is a summer resort built in the middle of a lake named Rudrasagar, with a total area of about 5.35 sq km. It is the only lake palace in Eastern part of India and has been built in a blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles.

Unakoti

Weather Conditions : Hot & Humid.
Location : The Unakoti Tirtha is located about 180 km from Tripura's capital, Agartala, and just about 8 km from the sub-divisional headquarters of Kailasahwar town.

The Unakoti Tirtha is a unique place, which can not be compared to any other place in the country in terms of absolute grandeur and artistry. Unakoti is deservedly reputed for its 7th - 9th century AD stone and rock cut images, deep in the forests near Kailashahar. Unakoti literally means one less than a crore (10 million) i.e. 99,99,999. The place does not have that many rock-cut sculptures, but these hundreds of massive rock-cut sculptures and those made out of sandstone, besides scattered ruins of ancient temples make Unakoti a unique place.

The Legend Says
According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Siva was going to Kashi through this place, along with one crore other gods and goddesses, he spent a night here. He had asked his followers to wake up before sunrise and proceed for Kashi . But, unfortunately, no body woke up, except for Lord Siva himself . He cursed them to become stone images. That is why we have one less than a crore stone images there.

The Images at Unakoti
The images found at Unakoti are of two types namely rock-carved figures and stone images. The famous rock cut carvings are the central Shiva head and gigantic Ganesha figures . The central Shiva head known as ‘Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava’ is about 30 feet high including an embroidered headdress which itself is 10 feet high. On each side of the headdress of the central Shiva, there are two full size images of goddesses - one of Durga standing on a lion, while the other one is believed to be that of Ganga astride a capricorn. In addition three enormous images of Nandi Bull are found half buried in the ground. There are various other stone as well as rock cut images at Unakoti. Every year a big fair popularly known as ‘Ashokastami Mela’ is held in the month of April which is visited by thousands of devotees. Unakoti houses the largest Bas relief sculpture in India.

Another three-eyed figure a little far away is believed to be that of Surya or Lord Vishnu. A huge Ganesh figure is also carved in the Unakoti complex, while there is also a chaturmukha Shivlinga nearby. Among other rock-cut and stone images are those of Vishnu, Nandi, Narasimha, Ravana, Hanuman, and several unidentified deities. The consensus among archeologists is that although the predominant impact of the Shiva cult is obvious, the sculptures were also influenced by several other cults like Tantric, Shakti, and Hatha yogis. It is also assumed that the site dates back to the period between the 12th and 16th centuries AD, and that the sculptures belong to two different periods of art.

Situated amidst picturesque hills packed with vegetation, the Dumboor Lake is one of the major attractions of Tripura, India. With 41 sq km of water surface, the lake possesses 48 islands and a hydel project located close to it. You can find numerous migratory birds of all kinds in winters. The lake also acquires a rich reservoir of natural and cultured fishes.

The Hydel Project near the Dumboor Lake from where river Gomati originates and this is called Tirthamukh where on 14th January every year famous 'Poush Sankranti Mela' (on the Makar Sankranti Day) takes place. The rivers Raima and Sarma converges at this lake.

Tripura Sundri Temple
Tripura Sundri temple or Mata Tripur Sundri (Maa Kali) temple is situated at a distance of 3 km going towards south from Udaipur town. This temple is regarded as one of the 51 Shaktipithas and was built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 on a Hill rock. Thousands of devotees, pilgrims and tourist visits here on the occasion of Diwali every year. The temple is known as Matabari. It is also attended daily by thousands of devotees. In the back side of the temple there is a big lake called Kalyan sagar.

Bhubaneshwari Temple
The Bhubeneshwari temple is very ancient holy place, visited by people from all the sects. Near to this temple is the Gunabati group of temples - the Durga temple, Mahadev temple and other several famous temples are located here. The temple is open to thousands of devotees from all the walks of life, who throng the place daily.

Sepahijala-the wildlife sanctuary
This wildlife sanctuary is about 25 km from Agartala, covering an area of about 18.53 sq km. It houses about 150 species of birds and the unique spectacled monkey. Inside the sanctuary a forest dak Bunglow called Abasarika offers accommodation. The sanctuary also houses botanical garden, a zoo, lake and boating facilities are also available nearby.

Jampui Hill

Location : Jampui Hill is situated at an altitude of 3000 feet above sea level, located about 200 km away from Agartala, the state capital. 90 km from District Head quarter ( Kailashahar).

Airport : The State capital, Agartala is well connected by air with Calcutta and Guwahati. Flight from Guwahati or Calcutta takes less than 45 minutes to reach Agartala. The North Tripura District has one small airports at Kailashahar where small chartered planes can land after prior information.

Railhead : The nearest rail station is at Kumarghat of NF railway. From here you can reach the place by road.

Road Transport : Kailashahar the District Head quarter of North Tripura District is connected by regular Bus service with Agartala. Kailashahar is also well connected by regular bus services with , Shillong, Silchar and all districts and sub-divisional towns of the State. It does sound interesting.. hopefully one day will visit Tripura and other north Eastern states.

What about the law and order situation? is it safe out there?

Hear a lot of news about Assam and Nagaland on news every now and then... Has Tripura got any such issues?

as i said in my previous post that m going to assam in nov so will call you from there to provide all updates and can xpct some good pics too as i will carry my digi cam this time

Law and Order is same everywhere and even National Capital Delhi is not safe so its somewhere like same only.

But the hotels and markes are not expensive there, you can get a good room for just 1000 bucks or so.

Sorry for late reply u asked about law and order it was everything all right till yesterday but a serial Bomb Blast terrorised our capital Agartala very sad to say .Four Bomb blasts occured at around 7.30 pm today.It was a good atmosphere as after six days our Durga puja starts the market was full of people as everyone was busy in marketing and this happened today.
