KUALA LUMPUR: MLabs Systems Bhd has teamed up with Microsoft Malaysia to create more value-added products to complement the country’s multimedia video conferencing (MVC) market.

This is following the success of its flagship product, the MCS6 multimedia conferencing system.

MLabs chairman Associate Prof Sureswaran Ramadass said the product, which was initially an internal project for Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1992, had taken off successfully as the first commercialised product by the university.

“Back then, we had too many meetings.

“The project was to address how to distribute information without having so many meetings, so that we can save time,” Ramadass said in an interview .

Now, the video conferencing provider wants to enhance its award winning MCS6, with Microsoft giving support in terms of direct access to technical expertise and sharing of information, he said.

“As we develop the video conferencing system further, we need certain information to make it successful. Three years ago, response to the system was very bad,” he added.

Ramadass said MLabs was now working on new video enhancement and value-added features for the system, apart from making it available to home users.

The Mesdaq-listed company also plans to introduce a 3G-type application.

“This will not only be an enhancement to the MCS6 but also a new product.

“We are strategising within MLabs itself. From there, we will take probably macro-size strategising exercise this month,” he added.

Recently, the company announced that it was in talks with a telecommunication company to jointly launch a streaming server for cellular phones to leverage on the increasing usage of 3G technology.

As for overseas projects, Ramadass said MLabs was eyeing other states in India, after securing a deal to build a network for video conferencing in Rajistan.

“The first part of the deployment will be valued at RM3.6mil, which can go up to RM30mil within one to two years,” he said.

MLabs also plans to open two offices, in West Asia and China this year.

The company has offices in the US, London and India.
