When using the internet, it is often useful to find out who owns a particular domain name.
The domain name is located within the URL of the website. The URL is located in the address bar of your browser near the top. Usually, the word immediately proceeding .com, .net, or .org is the domain name of the web site.
An easy example is Google. The domain name is google.
To find information about this domain including who owns it:
(1) Navigate to Allwhois.com.
(2) Type in google.com in the text box and click the search button.
(3) Scroll through the information box below the search button and you will see the following:
Registrant:
Dns Admin
Google Inc.
Please contact contact-admin@google.com 1600
In this case, we see that the owner is Google Incorporated. There will also be an Administrative Contact and a Technical Contact listed below the Registrant information.
An alternative to this site is Better Whois: The WHOIS domain search that works with all registrars..
As before, enter google.com into the text box and click the search button. On this site, a new page will open presenting the information about the domain name. For Google, it will say RESERVED in big red letters.
This site will occasionally present you with a code that you must enter. This is only done at random times to keep programs from accessing the information.
