I think shared hosting is good because you can share after using the hosting.
IT is cheap also than others.
Really depends on what application / website you are going to host.

No point in academic discussion by users like me, who are not software professionals, and
not having a web site of their own.

Well the choice of kind of hosting plan completely depends on your requirements. If you are just starting then shared hosting is the best suited plan for you. On the other hand if you are expecting huge traffic then go for dedicated server.
Airtel website builder or hosting is really not a great deal!
I do agree with you Sam. selecting hosting plan completely depends upon your requirement. If you are just starting or newbie to Webhosting you can go for Shared Package; if you want to resell some space to your clients or friends you can go for a reseller plan.
If you have an application which need separate installation, access to system files, requires administrator access (and have small resource consumption) which you can't install on shared server and you don't have enough budget you can go for VPS where you get complete administrator access to configure your application. Above all you have dedicated server which has its own CPU, Memory, Disk Space which you can utilize as per your requirement or need.
I hope I have explained properly but if you still have any questions you can PM me or ask here.
