Default Hosting your own web server

    Hi guys,
I would like to host a website for my startup. I want to host it myself at home/office at my own server. I dont want to go for any hosting service providers. I understand that this approach is costlier and messy but i want to go for that. How should i go about it? Which internet plan should i go for - i dont see this use case mentioned in airtel, bsnl etc broadband sites ?

    thanks

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center.

Thanks. But I know that , but dont want to host with third party. I would like to host the site my self at my own servers. I know its cheaper and better the way you suggested, but I want to host it myself for a couple of reasons. Any idea about that?

    thanks,

Do u have an unlimited plan ? If so download Ubuntu server edition and set it up . There are lots of guides on setting it up . offcourse you can resort to other linux but Ubuntu is esp user friendly for newbies. You can also try windows server. Also you must need a computer with good processing power and it should run 24*7 for hosting a site . VPS is another great choice if you cant do what i told. There are cheap fast VPS's for $15 which comes pre-installed with the above and you can connect it to them easily and configure them If you need any help setting it up reply in this thread i will be ready to help

    Hello broadjay,
I am currently planning to experiment the same. I am not yet sure this make sense for business purposes, but I would love to give it a try. I am a web developer and have enough experience to setup a complete Linux host stack.

Options I am currently looking at:
Vyatta for routing and security (search for them),
    Ubuntu LTS (10.04)

I have a few machines lying (dual cores, 4-8GB RAM) around and have a UPS with about 12-14 hours of backup for a single machine and routers.

For connection I am planning to use take a Tata Indicom Broadband connection. I have used their connection before and I am fine with the 50GB data limit. You can get a 10Mbps up/1Mbps down at a price of Rs 3.5K / month. But I have been offer a symmetric 10Mbps by them if I pay a higher installation charge. The data limit would still be 50GB and rental stays same.
(search their tariff - Lightning Fast plans I believe)

I will look for back up connectivity from Airtel probably (they do offer dedicated IP I if remember correctly).

I can not start on the project for next 2 months though (busy with other stuff). I am in Bangalore and if you are nearby I can help you setup anything you need.
    Thanks

yes as you mentioned.. if you have lots of cpu to back up perl cgi scripts and 50gb as you mentioned is alot of data.. though cost is a big issue here (and perhaps the service of internet not too good as well) but still it can save a lots of money.. than you have very quick access to all your data.. you have it near you.. it would be like your own data server if you do it with proper reading...

there are some very good and powerful and even good open-source webservers in the market.. i wont recommend any.. just have the look on google and check yourself..
Site from home gaya bhad mein... AIrtel se bolo FUP band kare.. BSNl se bolo 3G signal do!!!!>: (
