regularly defragment your disks completely..

use disk clean up as per atleast 3 times a week.. (differ according to use)

computer shub b virus free..

one last thing.. dont expect 1gb ram with vista.. to work at lightening speed.. its normal for little smooth slow operation.. as due to grafics.. aero theme.. and visual enhancements..

I was wondering, if I can recover a deleted file its got to be stored somewhere. So isn't using valuable disk space for that. How would I remove the files without leaving a trace on the computer ?. Even if I use a secure delete utility it will only overwrite the file not remove it.

When you delete a file (shift+delete) or clean the trash can/recycle bin, the file is as good as deleted and its space is availble for use. So I really do not understand what you mean when you say that valuable space is still occupied because file is not completely wiped off. Even if the file contents are not completely wiped off, so what? Your disk is free of that space once the file is deleted.

There are other reasons to completely wipe off the old file contents but that has nothing to do with speed or anything. There are softwares that can completely erase (wipe off) the file contents. This is more useful for security and privacy.

You must know that a disk is never free. A disk is made of bytes and bits. Each bit stores '0' or '1'. When a file is completely wiped off the space that was used by the file is written with '0' all over. It is the File Allocation Table that is tells the OS whether there is free space or no free space.

I was talking about file recovery softwares like Recuva, Undelete Plus etc. Its used to recover files deleted from Recycle Bin and permanantly deleted files using Shift + Delete, right. So how can we recover files if its completely wiped off.

Files can be recovered (even after shift+delete) by certain tools if the file data space is not overwritten, disk is not unfragments afterwards, etc.

I am not worried about privacy I was just wondering if storing traces of deleted files going to take disk space. I mean if I Shift + Deleted a 700MB movie file and I can recover the file with a file recovery software, is the movie file still using 700MB of disk space even after deleted. Sorry, its a silly doubt that pop up in my mind when I was using an 80GB hard disk with 5 partitions, and it will get pretty crowded if I had to store lots of large files.

No. After you (shift) delete a file or remove from recycle bin, the space is available for use. You can check that yourself.
