    regularly defragment your disks completely..

use disk clean up as per atleast 3 times a week.. (differ according to use)

    computer shub b virus free..

one last thing.. dont expect 1gb ram with vista.. to work at lightening speed.. its normal for little smooth slow operation.. as due to grafics.. aero theme.. and visual enhancements..

I was wondering, if I can recover a deleted file its got to be stored somewhere. So isn't using valuable disk space for that. How would I remove the files without leaving a trace on the computer ?. Even if I use a secure delete utility it will only overwrite the file not remove it.

When you delete a file (shift+delete) or clean the trash can/recycle bin, the file is as good as deleted and its space is availble for use. So I really do not understand what you mean when you say that valuable space is still occupied because file is not completely wiped off. Even if the file contents are not completely wiped off, so what? Your disk is free of that space once the file is deleted.

There are other reasons to completely wipe off the old file contents but that has nothing to do with speed or anything. There are softwares that can completely erase (wipe off) the file contents. This is more useful for security and privacy.

You must know that a disk is never free. A disk is made of bytes and bits. Each bit stores '0' or '1'. When a file is completely wiped off the space that was used by the file is written with '0' all over. It is the File Allocation Table that is tells the OS whether there is free space or no free space.

I was talking about file recovery softwares like Recuva, Undelete Plus etc. Its used to recover files deleted from Recycle Bin and permanantly deleted files using Shift + Delete, right. So how can we recover files if its completely wiped off.

Files can be recovered (even after shift+delete) by certain tools if the file data space is not overwritten, disk is not unfragments afterwards, etc.

I am not worried about privacy I was just wondering if storing traces of deleted files going to take disk space. I mean if I Shift + Deleted a 700MB movie file and I can recover the file with a file recovery software, is the movie file still using 700MB of disk space even after deleted. Sorry, its a silly doubt that pop up in my mind when I was using an 80GB hard disk with 5 partitions, and it will get pretty crowded if I had to store lots of large files.

No. After you (shift) delete a file or remove from recycle bin, the space is available for use. You can check that yourself.

Well, i used registry cleaner, but the major issue is you need to purchase it, if you download the free/trial version of it, it only detects and deletes the most normal one, yet most suspicious ones will be shown yet not erased.

So is there any other freely available registry cleaning tool??

First of all when u delete the data goes to the recycle bin. that means that the pointers to the data are lost and are targetted in the recycle bin!! when u do a restore from the recycle bin the data is presented back to you on the same place that u had, but this pointer is not necessarily stored in the same cluster that it wwas before on the hardisk... but still contains a point to the file that u deleted. When u Shift+Delete the pointer to the header of the file is lost and showing you that the space is free now!!!! but all the clusters occupied by the 700MB are still in place but the enteries in the file allocation table are turned to 0's. So once u start adding data in your hard disk at some point your data will be overriting on the 700MB movie file as it is reported as a free space. so for example you copy data of 300MB this over rides the 700MB space, leaving 400MB of data still on its place. When you use a recovery software it depends on the algorithm written to recover software to recover the 400MB of data, the stronger the algorithm the better a software is said to be coz u have a better chances of service in recovering your data. No recovery software can recovery 100%of data if the space has been overwritten many a times.... the only possible method of erasing the data is to do a low level formating in which the clusters are recreated again by burning on the harddrive which is like a factory setting.

Thanks a lot man that clears by doubts completely. Sorry, I just didn't know how to ask the question right.

I have used many registry cleaners like Advanced windows personal care , CCleaner , Amust registry cleaner , Registry Mechanic 7 and one more going by the name of Blue(something).....

Each shows a number of errors and cleans it...Some of them also do a registry Defrag and a host of other functions....

But if like me you were curious and installed multiple reg cleaners ....you will notice this
i scan and clean the reg using one reg cleaner....I rescan it with the same s/w and it shows no errors (registry is clean)....Now i scan using another reg cleaner and it ll show a lot of errors !

I have tried this with most reg cleaners (free and commercial) and the same thing happens ..........

If you dont believe me try it out urself ........

Much as I love Unix (and Linux), I am afraid that there is very little alternative to Windows right now. Open Office is good but cannot compare with MS-Office (yet).

Windows is for the masses, unix/linux is for the classes.

Arrow 13 steps to maintain my computer..

I take following steps to maintain my personal computer-

    1. Use an anti-virus with its firewall feature turned off. In my opinion Kaspersky is best. Right now I'm using EScan cuz of three reasons. (a) Its using Kaspersky as its Engine. (b) It has not let me down yet. (c) Its Indian.
I advise to stick with your own anti-virus unless it doesn't perform well.

    2. Though anti-virus suites provide anti-spyware, I still use 1 anti-spyware along with it. I use Spybot Search & Destroy with its tea-timer feature on to serve this purpose.

    3. Windows firewall is sufficient for me(home use). Besides Router's firewall is on too.

    4. For general browsing history, temp folder etc. cleaning purpose I use CCLEANER.

    5. For maintaining registry, I use UNIBLUE REGISTRY BOOSTER(something clicked Eddy? lol..) and yes this defrags registry too. Registry cleaning is important to delete the traces of ur uninstalled program. Tip- Always take a back-up of your registry before cleaning it.(full version torrent available)

    6. Most important software which helps to run my computer faster is Diskeeper 2008 Pro Premier. It is the best defragmenting tool I've used. It uses the funda of set it and forget it. It runs automatically in the background when my computer is ideal(in between 2-8 generally), therefore it does not use resources when I'm playing or surfing. There is an option to manually defragment too. But I never need to use it. I downloaded cracked version from torrent sites. There are quite other features also. But I never bother about them. Just turn everything to automatic, except auto-update. (As its cracked version)

    7. I use a s/w burstcopy(again torrent) for Windows. It optimizes the cut, copy and paste procedure by using maximum resources which normal Windows procedure can't do. Besides, it has a skip file feature which comes in handy, if u r copying from a cd/dvd and due to some reasons the file can't be copied, then u can just skip that file and burstcopy will just resume copying other files. Without it windows just terminate the copy process. :32:

    8. Windows search speed is another pain in a**. I use a s/w called AVA Find (Full version) to search my files or folders. Its like khul-ja-simsim. I type the name of file/folder in its search-box, and the file/folder just pops up in its explorer window in fraction of seconds. And it doesn't really bogs down my system. Its using just 6 MB of memory right now.

    9. My windows update is set to Notify me but don't download automatically and install them. This way I save my limited(2.5GB/month) day bandwidth. And I only install security, reliability and critical updates concerned to windows only. Other crap related to Office, Internet explorer(I use FireFox), Outlook, Visual Studio etc. are conveniently ignored.

    10. Windows defender is there to plug the security loopholes which only Microsoft knows..lol.. It really helped me once to remove a type of vundu trojan cleanly from my system when all other security softwares just detected the trojan but failed to remove.

    11. I keep the system restore feature on. Besides automatic restore points I make it sure to have a couple of manual restore points. Just in case...

    12. I use WinPatrol s/w to decrease the boot time and keep a tab on my startup items. It enables the feature of delayed start. i.e., When I boot my PC, all the startup items don't start popping up at once... cuz all of them have been assigned different time intervals after windows login.

    13. I keep my security softwares updated.

Note- I use specialized softwares only. I mean not to trust a single software to do all the work it promises. For example, Anti-virus suites with aniti-spywares r just not enough. One should use atleast 1 good anti-spyware too.

P.S.- I have shared almost all the softwares I use (tried n tested... except EScan) and steps I take to maintain smooth running of my system. I deliberately avoided comparisons between other alternate softwares which I used but ignored and the ones I'm currently using, just to avoid any confusion. You are free to use the softwares you trust. Comments and queries are welcome. If you liked my post, please give me some repo points.
