You can also use wordpress or smf for free forums, phpbb is also a very good choice.

If you are serious about starting a forum and want to get some good traffic then spend some money... get your domain name, your hosting and forum script. You can use opensource forum scripts like phpbb, wowbb, smf and a few others but to be honest its good to spend some money and get vbulletin instead due to the quality of their product and ease of use for both users and admin.

$150 for a vbulleting liscence, $10 for a domain, $10-15 per month for hosting in the begening.... and then comes the real expenses... marketing is the main expense not setting up a forum which most people think comes for free... thats not the case.. You would need to spend thousands of $$$$ to get a forum anywhere near success... there is another route and that is keep working hard and pray to god but that doesnt always work in my opinion.

SMF is not the best forum scripts out there.

Just everyone have said, free forums are just for beginners to try out there skills.

But, blogging is surely not limited to beginners.
Blogging can be a really good resource, if you are serious and have some small other SEO skills.
Anyway, it cannot be said that blogs will not reach up to the same levels as that of a website.

it is coming up beautifully!!! and nothing to pay still... touchwood!!

can u please share the link of your forum.........and by the way i found forumotion is the best free forum creator...........free forums started puttin ads on to free forums and we need to pay some amount to remove these ads...........

i have not created a free forum.i have created it using proper software,so that i can display ads!! that was the main aim..

the site is under dev.forums and subforums are being created, the basic theme will be alteres to give a different look,plus all the logos of the software need to be replaced by the college's logo..

by one week,it will be functioning.i will pm you the link.by then i hope my adsense account will also be verified..

what exact software you are using.........and putting the ads on forum can also be done by the self admin panel of forum by editing the template......

i cannot name the sw here.cos lets just say, for some unavoidable circumstances, i got it not through the ryt channel!! hope u get it..

and you r ryt..but then finding the exact piece of code to modify in the whole page takes a lot of very careful scrutiny.even an extra space can cause havoc.its better to be careful in the beginning than spend hours on debugging.
me and 2 of my friends,who will be mods are working on it.it should be done in a few days..
