Sub-domain is free in most of the free web hosts. We usually get a subdomain name like myname.freewebhost.com. However if you'd like to have a domain like yourname.com, then it's not free. It's usually around $10 (most of the time, it is less than $10) to register. If anyone is going to register a domain, I highly recommend to use Google Apps.
