Brave techies can try Microsoft's new Windows 7

Microsoft is opening up its new Windows computer operating system to anyone brave enough to download it early.

On Friday (Jan 9,2009) the public will be able to fetch a pre-release, test version of Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 7, the successor to the oft-maligned Windows Vista. CEO Steve Ballmer made the announcement Wednesday night on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show.

Trying out the software this soon is risky for all but the most tech-savvy. Beta software tends to be buggy. Moreover, the program will expire in about six months, while the for-sale versions of Windows 7 aren't expected until late this year or early next. So testers must revert to Windows Vista, XP or some other alternative.

Windows 7 now to be available at Windows7.

I tried Windows 7 beta. Its much faster than Vista. I measured the frame rate for games and time to load applications and open files. Its nearly comparable to XP. But then again its beta. We have to wait till the final product comes out before jumping to conclisions.

I also tried Win 7, it looks like a rebranded Vista to me. Of course there are changes under the hood. But the thing i hated the most was the new task bar. I can't pretty much live without quick launch. Otherwise it seemed ok to me.

I noted that WMP is missing a large amount of features. I hope its only because of Beta version. I only tested its performance. It definitely misses many features right now.

For regular users, always advisable too avoid betas, expecially of operating systems.
I don't think Windows 7 will be significantly different from Vista.

I think. You should give it a try and post back. I noticed significant performance improvement in Windows 7.

I did it try it mate , check this post : http://www.indiabroadband.net/window...ws-7-beta.html (Windows 7 Beta)

I did find that the system seemed to boot faster, but that was with no programs installed.

Since my drivers are not working in 7 I'm name abe to test 7 with all s/w installed.

^^ True. Win 7 was designed keeping in tune with the fact that it should be backward compatable with device drivers, as well as applications coupled with hardware of Win Vista.
