    Default Change in IP

    Hi,

My IP changed to 169..... from 192.168.1......
This is not the first time it has happened. I had to enter the values manually and now I am able to connect and post. Please shed some light on this problem. How could it change when I did nothing. I just left the system for a while and when I came back it was showing limited or no connectivity.

    Thanks in advance.

DHCP (option in your modem/router) assigns IP address to your computer. If you get any IP in the range of 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254, it means either your computer is not able to reach DHCP or leased configuration fails.

    Do you use Wireless?

    @sonofchacko2
how do you said that it is malware?

I use Nokia Siemens C 2110. It is not wireless. I use PPPoE. It happened twice before. When I tried to install Comodo Firewall. Both time, I had reinstall Windows. Because even disabling or uninstalling didn't gave results.

Now I use Zonealarm Firewall. It is almost 2 weeks since I have this new installation of Windows. It didn't happened before. Earlier I tried to change the IP manually as I did this time. But it didn't work, so I formatted C drive and reinstalled Windows. Luckily, this time when I entered the values manually, it worked.

    Quite possible.

I tried a smart scan using Adaware. It couldn't find any.

Check whether your software firewalls block any DHCP traffic?

Moreover, DHCP is for reducing administrator job of manual configuration of IP address and also for beginners who may fill bad entries in TCP/IP settings.

For less no of computers and that too for home and cafe use desktops, manual configuration is recommended. This avoids unwanted DHCP traffic which transmits every interval of lease period (this is the period when your computer talks to DHCP router that i am ALIVE and i use this IP).

    are you in stealth mode?

did you try adding your DHCP server (modem/router IP address) to trusted zone?

By default DHCP leases every 8 days! (not sure abt in modem and router). and you got this after a week!

if i remember the screens of Zone Alarm,
    1. goto Zone Alarm
    2. then Firewall page
    3. Choose Zone tab
    4. Add your Modem and/or router IP address
    5. Choose OK/Apply

You seem to be happy. :confused1:

By the way, I am now forced to ask you to check whether the XP installation source you have got is not what is causing all your problems.

DHCP is automatically enabling the IP. Thanks a lot

I tried using two separate discs. It was something with firewall. I tried assigning IP with Comodo. But it failed. With Zonealarm, it worked.

It is doing something with my torrents. I hardly get 5- 15 KBps when I use a 32 KBps connection. When I shut down the firewall, it went upto 28 KBps which I usually get.I have set allow for utorrent. What to do?

I turned off my firewall. It brought the download to zero. When I switched off, it is fine.

The Internet gateway was shown as disconnected but LAN connected. So I entered the IP manually and it worked. I have allow for utorrent in firewall from the beginning.
