    Default Windows 7, please help

    Hi,

I am planning to give Windows 7 a try. This is the download link.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../download.aspx

Which is the one I should select. 32 bit or 64 bit. Also heard it may corrupt mp3 files. Is that fixed ? I am trying to put it as a different partition. How much space is required. Can I use the same partition as that Windows XP SP2.

Also please do warn me of any possible mistakes and precautions.

    Thanks in advance.

32 Bit is the best as of now in terms of compatibility...

however if you are adventurous , you can always try 64 bit, its not as lacking in support as it used to be, and u should obviously be prepared to face non-working programs, more so because the OS itself may have bugs.

Mp3 corrupt files was fixed long ago, however there's a new, different bug in RC , so you should update as soon as you install.

No windows OS don't share the same partition, always install in a new partition except for upgrade (replacing) OS. Do clean install and install in a new partition..

It requires a minimum of 10 GB (as seen from my installation) for OS alone.

If you wish u can try installing directly from HDD (by extracting files from ISO to any folder and running setup.exe) or from usb by this method. (Run Vista SETUP from USB)

if you do not have more than 4GB ram there is no point in going for a 64 bit os

Is there any particular benefit of switching to Windows 7 ?

Like for XP, we can avoid USB drivers as most of them are plug and play.

USB drives, cameras and so on. Does Windows 7 have any such must have feature.

well lets just say that with updates being stopped to XP except critical updates, at some point in time u will have to upgrade , so why not do it now, unless u have any other issues.

    Hi,

I successfully installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC 7100 in my system.

After installation, I tried to install my motherboard CD. I use a Gigabyte motherboard (please check the screen shot). But I couldn't install it. There was mute icon in the speaker so I installed Realtek audio driver from Motherboard CD. It prompted for a restart. After restart, it gave BSOD. I tried more than once. Posting this from XP. Please tell me how to proceed.

Firewalls and AV's may hav problems with PRE-RTM os's , there's nothing unxpected in that, for now u can use inbuilt firewall...

    Enabling Quick launch...

unfortunately there's no quick launch in 7.... you have to create it if you want, it's pretty easy,....

    check this...

As far as I know there's no change in theme because of transpercy effect, maybe the sounds are different if you enable tat option.

Also wallpaper keeps changing automatically from the selected theme...

Tried without success. Also went to Gigabyte site. Not able to identify the proper driver.

My Motherboard is GA - K8VM800M, but it has

    GA - K8VM800M (Rev 1.X)

    GA - K8VM800M (Rev 2.X)

    GA - K8VM800M - RH

Also tried a driver detection from

    http://driveragent.com/gigabytepromo.php

It detect 2 driver requirement. But no option to download.

GB doesn't seem to have 7 driver for either revision...

there are a couple of sys utilities which give detailed system info...

    Everest Ultimate Edition

    Sandra Utilities

System Info for Windows (commonly SIW)

PC Wizard 2008 (kind of out dated)

    Beware

I used my Tuneup utilities 2009 in Windows 7.And then I switched to XP. Now my Tune up say it does not have a legal key. I think Windows & has some kind of reporting for registered software. Also when we use Media Player, it sends a unique player ID which represents our system. These remain hidden.

    Please try this application
    Code:
    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
You may have to visit the manufacturer's web site for
any Update drivers for Windows 7.

    "OUT OF thread"

windows does'nt report 3rd party software. It only authenticates "itself". As for tuneup it might me checking over the internet, or it may be due to the latest 8.0.3100 update

    @ essbebe

As far as I know berlac is mainly usefull only for reporting what windows updates are neccessary and maybe to check the security of computer, however when it comes to system drivers, utilities like driver magician are better.

I like to use "update notifier" and "sumo" for notifying updates to software, both freeware

all i can say. i recently installed wondows 7 for my acer laptop.. works like a charm...

themes are like.. just the aero transparency changes.. different shades.. and wal papers change according to the theme seclected.. and also the sound schemes..

as far as my reviews.. my build is 7057. till now i dint see any bug. very light n fast. almost all drivers are for me working.. infact i have not installed any drivers for my laptop.. everything works perfect.. including bluetooth.. (i have not installed even bluetooth drivers for it).

talking abt compatibility.. its better than vista somewhat parallel to xp i would say.. i mean if any program doesnt work in windows 7 u can just go to compatiblily assistant and fix it up.. it really works.. better than vista and fast.. i think all programs u can make them work in this way.. i love it...

p s : pl give me the key if anyone has for 7057. i still dint activated it.. just 30 days trial. to activate they need key.. let me know where i can get for my build version.

try downloading win 7 RC, actually you don't have to do the actual download, jus start the process,

You will be asked to login using MSN hotmail , Live account, after which you will be given a key.

But there's no gaurantee that it will work.
