BIOS = Basic Input Output System

It is the first program to run when the power is supplied to the PC that determines what all are connected to the PC and what are its capabilities.
It is the place where the basic things like HDD RAM Processor and other Vital components gets the instructions to do their work.

Upgrading BIOS is not so easy are it is Embedded in IC. to update we had to replace the IC but now i hae heard that they have made it upgradeable (not sure).

No that is not entirely correct.
BIOS we dont install it nor corrupt it. The manufacturer of the MB will do it and it will be embedded in a chip which will be in ROM format you cannot alter it. Here it is

This is example of one company, others may be in different size and shapes.

BIOS is not installed i think you are talking about Flashing BIOS to latest version. You can get the current version of your BIOS from BIOS utility at system start up and check there.

BTW which laptop u are using you can get the latest or updated version of BIOS from your system manufactures site if they provide so download the setup file and you can FLASH your BIOS to the latest one locally.

exactly correct. you dont need to do anything other than booting from OS CD and install it.

but however if your HDD is not partitioned then you need to do it before installing OS but its no way related to BIOS

if your laptop came without an OS you can just install one with the OS cd as usual not to worry about anything related to BIOS. just go ahead.

Usually you can get BIOS updates from the manufacturer's website.

However if your system is working normally then there's no need to update. Its usually recommended NOT to update when you don't have a problem.

BIOS is updatable. Its called "Flashing" as some1 had pointed out b4.
U can get it frm the mobo manufacturer site. U need a seperate tool for flashing it. It usually comes with the Mobo CD.

If u have serious issues with ur Mobo, like processor not being recognised, and other stability issues, only then flash it to new version.

If there is any problem in the updating of the newer BIOS, ur mobo will become useless and u will need to buy a new 1. so i will not recommend it.

Removing the jumper or the battery will also not help.

BIOS = Basic Input Output System (as said by some one)

Your system has two types of Memory

    ROM and RAM

ROM = Read only memory. is a component of BIOS

The ROM has you motherboard details, HDD Drivers and other firmware details.

When u start the System , the contents of ROM is copied to RAM.

Thats why you motherboard appears when u start your system.

    Intel
    Energy
    American Megatrends

    All are from Bios

Partly. you have to remove the chip by resoldering it and then reprogramming it. Possiblity of which is difficult for an average user.

Not really if that happens then you have to send it to the manufacturer where they will replace the BIOS chip and your board will be back on line

Some M/B come with clipable BIOS Chip you can easliy pin it and can pin out the errased one, easy.

GIGABYTE recently came out with DualBIOS M/B's

GIGABYTE DualBIOS™ feature two physical BIOS ROMS mounted onto the motherboard. One chip acts as your "Main" BIOS, or the BIOS your system primarily uses during boot up. The second chip acts as a "Backup" BIOS and has the factory default BIOS version on it. If your "Main" BIOS happens to fail or stops functioning, the "Backup" will automatically take over on your next system boot with little or no down time.

This process is completely automatic. When you discover you have a problem, all you need to do is shut the system down and then boot up again. The GIGABYTE DualBIOS™ does the rest. When there is a BIOS firmware failure detected, the "Backup" BIOS will first recover the "Main" BIOS file back to its factory default BIOS version, and everything is back to normal again. If the BIOS failure is due to actual hardware damage, the Backup BIOS will take over and function as the Main BIOS.
