Note that IE6 had many vulnerabilities which have not been & will not be solved. Even if you are a website developer & want to check how your website look on browser , you should not use it for browsing. You can use firefox with user agent switcher enabled which will help you accesss your bank accounts if your bank don't allow the use of any other browser.

As for your question . It is possible for Microsoft to detect that you are using pirated versions. My paternal aunt had a pirated version install on her computer & microsoft had detected it because she had checked her version on microsoft site. But it didnot disable any software. Only thing that was not functioning was screensaver & wallpapers & there was a panel saying proclaiming genuine Microsoft windows advantage. Also on logon there was a delay of 3 seconds in which it said go to Microsoft site to get genuine Microsoft windows advantage & a button having "resume written on it." which used to enabled after 3 seconds.

If you have suffer from above symptons , then only you can say that it was due to pirated versions. Also don't visit Microsoft website to download a software as they can sometime detect you are using pirated version.

PS: I have installed the free Vista Business edition from my msdnaa account in her computer.

You can use IE 8 on non genuine Windows. I fear IE 7 do not work in non genuine windows. You can always try firefox. It is much better than IE.

But a developer will always need IE because more than 70% people use IE.

Answer to your question in plain language is no as I have run IE7 on linux using IEs4Linux.

    For browsing I prefer firefox.

Heartly agree with you but Microsoft products cost a bomb shell.

    Support FSF. Use Open Source.

I agree that Windows is expensive at Rs. 6500. But look at it this way:

You need to buy a new OS maybe once in 5 years. A new OS upgrade will NOT cost as much next time. People buy expensive mobile handsets costing way over 10K (sometimes as much as 25K) and change them every two years or so.

    There are many such examples.

I also support Open Source. But unfortunately MS rules at the moement.

Yes. But Volume License Policy is different and price is not Rs. 6500 per copy for the first time either.

According to me Windows is nearly free.

Its their MS Office , Expression Studio 2 & Visual Studio that cost a bombshell & their services which run on it.

    Support the ODF.
PS: I get nearly all of their latest software through my msdnaa account for free.

i believe msndaa account also does not offer much concession.the only concession is the saving of DVD cost for MS.it's not like you can buy original VISTA at half or lesser rate using msndaa acount.but you can get OEM versions for less than half the price but you have to forget about the support.

Other than the OS almost everything else I use is Open Source/Freeware. Firefox, OpenOffice, Comodo, photofiltre, CCleaner to name a few.

    @whitestar_999

MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) is a Microsoft program available to academic organizations, mainly colleges and universities, although there is also a high school version. The participating schools pay an annual fee for the MSDNAA service, in exchange for which, applicable departments (computer science, computer engineering, information technology, and related fields of that organization) as well as students and faculty can acquire licensed copies of Microsoft software such as Microsoft Windows, Visual Studio and other products. The list of software each college and university gets is dependent on the agreements made by that particular organization.

The software can be used in coursework and personal non-commercial projects. Students may continue to use these products for non-commercial purposes, even after they graduate.

MSDNAA software is accessed through a dedicated website run either by e-academy or by the university/high school itself. The service run by e-academy is called E-academy License Management System or ELMS. Access is determined by the MSDNAA agreement, but is usually given to students who meet certain requirements (must be currently enrolled in or teaching course(s) in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics).

Despite its name, an MSDNAA account is not a true MSDN Subscription-account and cannot be used to access the subscriber's section of the MSDN website or its downloads. -Wikipedia.

I got it from IEEE Computer Society for free. As you see its dependent on your organization. My Organization is one of the richest that's why I can download most of the software for free. Even Win 7 will be freely available from it.

well then it's not of much use to majority of the population.i was aware of something like this where universities provide MS softwares to their students for almost at no cost.
