is pc tools good ? what about webroot ?
I just tested Comodo and it works fine on Windows 7 RTM. PC Tools failed.
Don't know how good PC Tools is. I just installed it on Windows XP with Threatfire and also going to try PC Tools Antivirus.
PC Tools Firewall Plus
- More user friendly interface compared to Comodo
- Lot more features than Zone Alarm, Outpost or Ashampoo
- Uses less system resources than any of the above
- Easy to Customize
PC Tools Firewall Plus- Screenshots
I didn't see any problem on a quick look. Seems better than any other Firewall software I have tried. Passed the firewall leak test without any problem. Have to give it a little time.
Never tried Webroot. Is it Freeware ?
No webroot is not freeware. Maybe its time to try PC tools.
Edit : it seems they are offering it for free (at atleast as of now)

That's great. Thanks for the info. I am downloading it now.
After trying it out, PC Tools software is too complicated for me. Webroot didn't work either. I already have the router firewall. I will stick with Zone Alarm for now. But it also block many IP's when downloading torrents.

all of my vista drivers worked with windows 7
You are welcome Archer.
Just another thought - the Windows Firewall which is there in 7 is actually an excellent firewall with stealth mode and all unused ports blocked (check with Shields Up). The only thing lacking, in my opinion, is an uncomplicated way of blocking outgoing connections. This can be done by manually fiddling with the firewall rules but most users may find this intimidating. You can of course use Vista Firewall Control, which is free and does this through a GUI and works with Windows 7 also...
In any case, I wonder why there is this great need for a firewall anyway. Most of us who are on any of the broadband services are behind a Router which is a hardware firewall in the sense that ports not forwarded are blocked anyway... Just disable the uPnP service in your installation of whatever OS you are using and manually forward ports if required and you have a much better firewall than any software firewall that you are using.
May I ask why you are using Bridge mode? Is there a reason for this? If not, I would suggest using the router as it should be used - as a router and NAT device which gives you a layer of hardware protection which no software firewall can adequately provide. In addition, most of these pings appear to be NetBios and SMB pings. I would in any case disable NetBios over TCP/IP and SMB over TCP/IP anyway - they are of no use to PCs not operating on a LAN environment and even then a positive security risk!
- Keep downloading from RapidShare, that's the main reason. Other than that i'd like to have a control over my connection.
- And of course while using night unlimited, its easier to disconnect/reconnect than to
- I'll disable the netbios and smb as you. while using firewall in bridge mode, I used to get "System is trying to receive a connection from internet". I accept it ,sometimes the system hangs immediately.
- and i'm a bit paranoid, that passwords can be stolen from router.
- Morover i heard that older routers(UT-300R2) may not be able to handle large number of connections (torrents) , though i'm not sure if its true.
I have tried everything. But i am not able to print document in windows 7.i have HP all in one 1400 series.Does anyone have same printer.
what error do you get while trying to print ? did the printer driver install ?.
Have you tried any tweak software which disable print spool ? Is the driver ok ?
Try troubleshooting.
Just wanted to clarify a few things -
1. Why do you think that you would have less control over your connection if you use a router? I would think it gives you a greater measure of control over all aspects of your connection than bridge mode.
2. What stops you from downloading from Radpidshare if you use the router mode? I can download from rapidshare pretty happily even though I am using two routers in series - a Beetel 110BX1 from Airtel and a Linksys WRT54G for wireless and wired access. Yes, the initial setup is a bit tricky but once setup you can by and large forget about it...
3. The connect/disconnect problems can be handled by software pretty easily, i.e. set up your downloader to connect/disconnect at particular times...
4. I have used the UT300R2 earlier on a 2mbps connection and it handled about 200 torrent connections pretty easily.
5. Regarding stealing of passwords, I feel what it is far more serious is if people were able to steal passwords of your system than just the router passwords - which is what you are exposing yourself to when you are on bridge mode.
Sorry for the long post and all this gyan, but I felt that maybe it would help you to get more secure...
I currently use just the Windows 7 firewall / Avast Antivirus and have the other security measures in place and have not been infected with any malware in the past either. Just need to be careful when you download stuff from rapidshare/torrents as most times it is the downloads which are infected so there is little that a firewall can do if the program itself manages to spoof it from the inside...
Cheers
I don't mind the long post at all, i'm all ears to learn as much as possible.unk:
Thanks for the inspiration, i'll search for all tutorials needed to run in PPPoE, and if i get any doubts i'll open a new thread !
From the beginning i was using bridge mode so i didn't bother to change back to PPPoE.
A big thanks for all the help. I will rep as soon as i can:thumbup:
Yup even I was using Bridge mode earlier... Never wanted to change cuz it was the easier option and was doing the job for me...
I'm glad that I'm using PPPoE mode now... Thanks to the multiple systems at my home... More convenient and more secure!![]()

Never have carired out an upgrade installation of ANY Windows OS because I believe that that is a sure recipe for disaster. A clean new install is the way to go for any new OS install and it has the added advantage of cleaning out all the old junk that you accumulate over time. Just keep your data on a seperate partition and you can do this with no pain at all...![]()
