Default Windows 7 very slow, please help

    hi,

In my Windows 7, I installed Norton Internet Security 2010 Beta. Since it was very high on resources, I uninstalled it. Even after uninstalling, system CPU consumption ranges around 100 %. It is so slow that I cannot even use Winamp. The music is played intermittently. Unfortunately, I do not have system restore. How can I reinstall Windows 7 ? Can I put the CD, format partition and simply reinstall. My system has both Windows 7 and XP. How will it affect booting ? I get an option to choose from XP and W7.

I tried task manager and couldn't find any suspecting entries.

PS: I do not have any useful data in W7.

I have 1.5 GB RAM. System was ok till I installed (after 1 month of using) NIS 2010 Beta.

I checked task manager and memory consumption no process which could be terminated

not terminating, to check if any particular process is occupying CPU/memory

i had similar problem after installing codec package (in vista), an particular process was eating 95% of cpu. hav also seen adobe reader using 1.5GB of RAM

Sorry. I didn't notice. But it was on top. The audio failed because I terminated the process. When I checked with driver agent, all my audio drivers were up to date.

if vista had worked well on the same machine, windows 7 should unless there is driver or any installed app incompatabilities

are you using the RTM leaked one?

pls chk this link System Slowdown - Norton Internet Security / Norton AntiVirus 2010 Public Beta - Norton Community

it doesn't have the solution but am convinced NIS 2010 beta doesn't play well with win 7

Jus start the setup from XP or 7. when it asks for the partition, select the SAME partition where you have been using 7. It will change existing windows folder to windows.old

It works the same if do not want to upgrade from 7100 to RTM too.

After installing, delete the windows folder from windows 7 only.

I think formatting the Windows 7 partition will make Windows XP unable to boot as it's using Windows 7's boot loader and you will need to use Windows XP CD Recover Console to repair with fixboot or fixmbr commands to straight things up. I used to do this as an easy way to remove Linux. Don't know if it's similar case. But be careful.

Thanks. I think I will wait till get some reviews before trying RTM.

depends on the case. If C drive is formatted that happens.

I use Xp in C and Vista in D, so even if i format D, the bootloader remains.

I use Easy BCD to change between vista and Xp bootloader.

You can use bootsect.exe from vista setup to achieve the same thing.

Thanks Archer. I am not experienced with dual boot. That is why I checked.

You will now get a boot menu that says two options
    Windows seven , and
    Older version of microsoft windows.

I have done this on my laptop. No problems at all.
Be careful that u format the right drive.
