    Default choosing the windows updates.

    hi folks,
recently i formated my harddisk and installed the os VISTA now after installing i am entitled to to dwnld and update all the updates provided by microsoft. And there are about 59 updates for OS; size about 251 MB(total) :crying: see the pic. all r important as suggested.. :crying:

i am bit worried, with passing time will updates cover up most of disk space, earlier i jus used to opt for automatic updates, but for now i m bit cautious :tank: about downloading and installing updates.

How to choose the best possible windows updates, wats your take on this? All ideas are welcome.

Note down the code numbers of each updates (eg: 950975) and go to the address "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/codenumber" to find out the use of each update

    Example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950975

Turn off updating ! Unless specifically asked by some program/software, please don't update. I have found that we do not need most of the updates, even though all are termed important. They don't enhance anything, all the security updates won't prevent virus attacks. The only thing is we have to be cautious where we surf, what programs/software we install.

    ^^^

Securty Updates are meant to fix the Loop Holes in an OS, they are not meant for virus attacks.

But your OS can be exploited by breaking into it by exploiting the bugs. Updates are for bugs. A bugs free software can never be created.

i never update windows and manually update if any new service pack is lanuched.........there is wastage of bandwith too...............for users who are on limited connections should download updates in NU only(if available)

always install the security updates ...........
but you may opt out of the others like authentication updates b'coz if in case you are using a pirated version of OS you would be troubled by the Authentications pop-ups.

    a good av+a good firewall+a good antispyware+windows defender

Yeah yeah ........ thats what all is required ...........
but all this can't just fill up the loop holes in the OS as these don't have any effect on the OS architecture ....... which can be exploited.thus security updates are an essential part, which are required to be installed preferrably

    @ bingbang
Vista has released Service Pack 1 & 2.
Since you have reinstalled Vista, I assume that one or both service packs are not installed.
Check your OS status. (Vista Orb > Right Click on Computer > Properties)
If it does not Show Vista Service Pack 2 , download the relevant service packs and install.
